Charles Leclerc aiming for Ferrari title with Lewis Hamilton on board

The pair are regarded as two of the quickest drivers on the F1 grid

-

The latest mouth-watering partnership in the careers of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc will begin in 2025 as the drivers become teammates at Ferrari, but the Monegasque refused to say whether he believes he is quicker than the seven-time world champion.

Owing to his reputation in qualifying, where he has claimed 23 pole positions, Leclerc is regarded as one of the fastest, if not the fastest, over one lap and is viewed as a world champion-calibre racer by most pundits.

Similarly, Hamilton doesn’t need any introduction. The Mercedes driver has 104 career poles, 103 wins and seven driver championships whilst handily beating a series of strong teammates in Fernando Alonso, Jenson Button and Nico Rosberg across his career.

So one big question on many minds of those speculating about the future dynamic is which one of them will actually turn out to be faster whilst pushing the red Ferrari’s to the limits of performance?

On that front, Leclerc isn’t willing to talk about it just yet as he admits the signing was unexpected.

“It is too early to say,” Leclerc said to media ahead of the 2024 Bahrain GP on who will be faster. “I think we’ll know for sure next year where we are compared to him [Hamilton],

“I think it’s going to be very interesting to have alongside me driving the same car, such an incredible champion in Lewis. And I hope that we can really bring the team forward to try and win a championship, which is the goal of everybody and what I want too.”

Leclerc not fazed by Hamilton signature

Despite being the top dog in Ferrari, it’s an interesting assessment of his character that the 26-year-old isn’t afraid or agitated by Hamilton stepping into his den.

Especially considering that the news came just weeks after he extended his contract with Ferrari, who he joined in 2019, and that he said it was a surprise to him and unimaginable.

“To be honest, it’s not something that I imagined would happen,” Leclerc said about Hamilton’s signing to media. “Obviously, it was a surprise.

“I knew about it for quite a bit of time, and I knew it before it was announced that there were discussions towards the possibility, but it’s not something that I’ve been thinking about for a long time.”
