Carlos Sainz’s war cry: Ferrari can win 2024 Australian GP

Max Verstappen is on pole position for the 2024 Australian GP with Carlos Sainz starting second in his Ferrari

Carlos Sainz has produced a mammoth effort all weekend to qualify second for the 2024 Australian Grand Prix following appendicitis surgery and he isn’t done there as the Spaniard has proclaimed that Ferrari can win the race in Melbourne!

Sainz finished the session 0.270s down on Max Verstappen‘s pole time, and with Sergio Perez being demoted to sixth behind Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc, Sainz believes he can repeat his 2023 Singapore GP accomplishment with a bit of fortune.

Ferrari have been very competitive in long runs with Red Bull, even having the edge over the defending world champions at times, so they do appear to have a genuine shot at victory.

For Sainz in second, if he gets a good start then who knows what could happen in the race and he feels though tyre management could be a particular strength, despite Red Bull commonly being known as the best in this area.

“Without pain I can push and I have a good feeling with the car we can do well,” Sainz said to Sky Sport Italia. “I feel good and so far the degradation with the front is good, but we tried the medium, not yet the hard.

“If I feel good tomorrow, and if we do a perfect job, I think we can win.”

Sainz will need to go through hell to win

Sainz is aware of the task ahead of him though. On a normal day, Red Bull and Verstappen are impervious to defeat, but the Spaniard is also recovering from surgery, making physicality an issue.

He hasn’t done a full race simulation yet and the race will run over 58 laps but that doesn’t mean the 29-year-old’s hunger for victory is any less insatiable.

“Everything I’m doing is part of the programme to recover ahead of tomorrow,” Sainz continued. “So far I’ve only done 15-20 laps per session, which is not many. Tomorrow I will have to do 58 consecutive ones, which is a lot more.

“Every day that passes I feel better. I won’t be, and am not, 100 percent, but it doesn’t worry me because I have no pain. I have strange sensations in the car, everything moves a little bit, but that is normal.”
