Carlos Sainz and Lewis Hamilton explain fallout of Ferrari move

Hamilton and Sainz emphasise that there are no hard feelings between them, as Sainz rationalises Hamilton's move to Ferrari from Mercedes

Carlos Sainz bears no grudge and completely understands Lewis Hamilton‘s desire to join Ferrari, as the Spaniard begins his final season racing for the Italian team, with the Mercedes man moving to the Scuderia in 2025.

The move, which sees Hamilton bring to an end his long-term relationship with Mercedes, has ultimately left Sainz without a drive for 2025.

Sainz, who has raced for Ferrari since 2021, had hoped to re-sign with the team but now finds himself forced to move elsewhere. Despite Hamilton‘s transition leaving Sainz in a precarious position, the Spaniard is sympathetic to Hamilton‘s choice to depart Mercedes in favour of Ferrari.

“The choice to join Ferrari, I would have done the same in his position,” Sainz told the press in Bahrain. “I think Ferrari is a great team, and at some point towards the second half of your career… it’s a team you would like to be a part of.”

“So I fully understand that. There’s someone like Fred [Vasseur] that [Hamilton] knows and has a good relationship with and trust. It’s a no-brainer to go to Ferrari.”

Hamilton has a previous history with Ferrari team principal Vasseur, having driven for the Frenchman’s ASM F3 team, and ART GP team in GP2.

Hamilton has experience winning Vasseur, clinching the GP2 championship in 2006, and has previously acknowledged that this positive relationship with Vasseur influenced his decision to join Ferrari for 2025.

No hard feelings between Sainz and Hamilton

Sainz took care to emphasise that there is no animosity between himself and Hamilton over the move, adding that it is just how the sport works.

Hamilton was quick to reiterate this sentiment: “I think what’s most important is that we have a really good relationship.

“I think that’s something that all of us drivers have actually improved on over these past couple of years. There’s a huge amount of respect between us all, and I have a huge amount of respect for Carlos. So don’t feel that there’s any animosity or anything like that.

“It’s not that it’s not a personal thing. It’s what happens in this racing world. And I hope that nothing changes between us through that. I don’t think it will.”

Hamilton will partner Charles Leclerc at Ferrari from 2025, who remains with the team having recently signed an undisclosed contract extension.
