Carlos Sainz fuels Red Bull talk as Ferrari star reveals ‘best options’

The Spaniard has several teams to choose from as he looks to secure a drive for the 2025 season.

Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz has dropped a hint over which Formula 1 team he would like to join for the 2025 season after being heavily linked with a return to Red Bull.

The Spaniard has been in fine form in 2024 so far, winning the Australian Grand Prix and finishing on the podium on Bahrain and Japan, having missed the Saudi Arabian GP after being diagnosed with appendicitis.

Sainz’s form has made him a serious contender to join Red Bull, with Helmut Marko confirming talks had taken place between the two parties, while a seat swap with Ferrari-bound Lewis Hamilton is also on the cards.

With neither team expected to make a swift decision, Sainz is prepared to wait if it means joining a team capable of winning races next season.

“I think it all depends on what they offer you and the type of project. As a driver, I’m always going to try to look for the fastest option available,” Sainz told the press in Shanghai, including, ahead of Sunday’s Chinese GP.

“Especially with the shape I’m in, I think if they give me the right car and the right team, I can win races and get on the podium, as I am showing this year. That is my number one priority as a driver and it is something that I will always look for.”

Sainz leaves door open for Audi

The door has closed on a potential switch to Aston Martin after Fernando Alonso signed a deal until 2026, but Sainz insists he is not panicking as his “best options” are still up for grabs.

“Of course, the best options for me are still open, which is a positive thing and takes a bit of time, given the market situation. I think it will take some time for everyone to make their own decisions.”

His comments would suggest that Sauber, who will be absorbed by Audi in 2025, may be out of the running after they reportedly submitted an offer for him to replace one of Valtteri Bottas or Zhou Guanyu.

The Swiss team are one of the backmarkers and haven’t won a race since 2008 when they joined forces with BMW. However, Sainz insists he will give full consideration to offers on the table after recently confirming his management team had spoken to “every team”.

“I’m sure there are other very interesting options in the medium term, not even the long term, that I will consider and am considering,” Sainz added. “Each option, without a doubt, has its advantages and disadvantages, and I will take them all into account.”
