F1 Canadian GP 2025 Free Practice 2: Highlights and Reaction as Russell goes quickest

Join us for FP2 from the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal

-

Hello and welcome to this Total Motorsport live blog for Free Practice 2 at the F1 2025 Canadian GP from Montreal, with teams looking to further fine tune their setups after a relatively uneventful session earlier in the day.

The major headline from FP1 was a crash for Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc. He locked up heading into the Turn 3/4 chicane and had a heavy impact with the barrier right along the left side of his car. The Ferrari driver locked up under braking, clipped the inside wall, and ricocheted into the barriers on the opposite side.

Max Verstappen topped the timesheets in a lively first practice session for the 2025 Canadian Grand Prix, with Verstappen’s benchmark time of 1:13.193 put him 0.039 seconds ahead of a resurgent Alex Albon, with Carlos Sainz – running under the Williams banner this season – just 0.082s back in third. It was a confidence-boosting start for the Grove-based team.

Total-Motorsport.com’s F1 2025 Canadian GP live updates for Free Practice 2 will offer fans unparalleled insight into team strategies, reliability concerns, and potential frontrunners. So stay tuned with us as FP2 at the F1 2025 Canadian GP unfolds live from Montreal.

Chequered flag in FP2

There we have it, FP2 and Friday’s action comes to a close. That session certainly wasn’t filled with flashpoints but the most notable moment saw Lance Stroll hit the wall at his home race and miss the majority of the session. The Canadian will be playing catchup on Saturday when qualifying rolls around.

The same can be said for Charles Leclerc who missed FP2 having crashed his Ferrari in FP1. George Russell was the fastest man on track in FP2 and looked to be very comfortable, whilst the McLaren’s managed to put in a better showing than they did in FP1. The Red Bulls regressed, with Verstappen staying in P9 and Tsunoda only reaching P15. Lewis Hamilton’s P8 will not inspire confidence for Ferrari, especially with the added context of Leclerc’s absence.

2 minutes to go

Plenty of drivers have been struggling with the final chicane. Russell just had a very big snap there, whilst Sainz and Bortoleto almost tangled on entry and both went bumping over the kerbs. Almost every driver seems to have gone straight on there at some point today, even Norris and Verstappen.

5 minutes to go

Lando Norris has gotten a lot closer to that fastest time from Russell. He is now just +0.028 behind the Mercedes man and could well take P1 before the session comes to a close. What does seem clear so far is that the McLaren’s won’t have it all their own way in qualifying. The race is a different matter, though.

15 minutes to go

Yuki Tsunoda doesn’t seem to be making any progress in this session. He finished P11 in FP1 and Christian Horner seemed to be content with the Japanese driver’s work, but he now sits P15 and will be looking to get into the top 10 before the session is over.

His teammate, Verstappen, is complaining about brake temperatures and says that the issue is worse than it was in FP1. He is down in P9 right now, so a clear regression from both Red Bulls in terms of position.

24 minutes to go

The McLaren’s are having a better time in this session. Norris is up to P2 now and Piastri is in P4. Carlos Sainz is continuing to show some impressive pace as he sits in P5, and Russell looks untouchable in P1.

30 minutes to go

Bit of drama for the Racing Bulls. Liam Lawson is very angry after an Alpine gets in his way, and then Hadjar is quickly on the radio to complain about a Sauber doing the same thing.

Kimi Antonelli has found some pace on the soft tyre and he moves up to P2, meaning Mercedes look like a genuine force in Canada as things currently stand.

35 minutes to go

Franco Colapinto does not like Turn 2. He dropped his Alpine there in FP1 and now he’s done it again. He’s gotten away with it again in regard to any contact with the barrier but he won’t want to carry this habit any further into the weekend.

38 minutes to go

Amusing moment as Alex Albon comes into the pits but completely misses the Williams box and effectively performs a drive-through penalty. He sits P6 at the moment whilst teammate Carlos Sainz is P2. George Russell is the most composed and fastest man on track during this session. His 1:12.123 on the medium tyre is the fastest time and he is getting quicker and quicker.

49 minutes to go

Max Verstappen is complaining about the stability of his Red Bull, saying the problem is prevalent at the entry to every corner. He has the fourth-fastest time at the moment on the soft tyre.

53 minutes to go

Lance Stroll has got serious damage and is out of the session. He glanced a wall when exiting the second chicane and one of his front-left wheel has buckled. He’s stopped out on track under orders from the team despite Stroll wanting to bring the car back.

Cars on track for FP2

We’re underway for this second practice session in Canada and Lewis Hamilton is straight out on track as the sole Ferrari in the session. He had the fifth-quickest time in FP1 and will be looking to make a statement in this session.

No Leclerc in FP2

Confirmation from Ferrari that Charles Leclerc will not take part in this session. The damage sustained in that crash during FP1 is too great and the Monegasque driver will miss out on some valuable running. That’s a big blow to Ferrari who really need a big weekend in Canada.
