AlphaTauri’s Liam Lawson admits hindsight is a great thing

Lawson went aggressive on tyre use in Q1 and had to pay the price in Q2 at the 2023 Japanese GP

Liam Lawson has said that AlphaTauri made the right decision based on the available information and that ‘hindsight is a great thing’ as he was eliminated by 0.043 in qualifying for the 2023 Japanese Grand Prix.

In just his fourth Formula 1 qualifying session, the rookie impressed again as he was narrow eliminated by Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin with a slender margin of 0.043s.

It’s the third race weekend that the Kiwi has made Q2 but he did not get a chance to complete a second run as he only had one spare set of softs for the session.

AlphaTauri went aggressive to get Lawson into the second part of qualifying and as he watched nervously to see if he made the final 10, but he had no hang-ups about the decision.

“To be honest before quality didn’t [anticipate making Q3],” Lawson said to the media. “I think that’s why we went quite aggressive with the with the tyre strategy.

“We used the three sets for Q1 and had a strong car and then in Q2 I only had one set, so I think looking back obviously hindsight is a great thing.

“Yuki [Tsunoda] did a great job to put the car into Q3, I think we definitely had the potential now knowing that we could have done that, but for the information we had I think we made the right decision from from where we were for practice.

“Obviously to miss out by such a small margin I would have loved to have had another set of tyres.”

Lawson misses out on AlphaTauri drive

Prior to Qualifying in Suzuka, AlphaTauri announced their driver line-up for the 2024 F1 season with Lawson in contention with Daniel Ricciardo for a seat alongside Yuki Tsunoda.

Ultimately, it was the Australian who got the nod to take one of F1’s last remaining drives for next year, though Lawson will continue in his role as reserve driver for AlphaTauri as well as Red Bull.
