Fernando Alonso has warned Mercedes that Aston Martin will crush them at the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix.
Mercedes‘ double podium in Spain, courtesy of Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, plus Lance Stroll‘s sixth and Fernando Alonso‘s seventh saw Aston Martin drop to third in the Formula 1 constructors’ championship, 18 points behind the Brackley-based team.
“Looking at the constructors’, it’s true that Mercedes gained some important points, but we again gained points on Ferrari,” Alonso told the media. “In Canada, we’ll bring more things and in Silverstone too.
“With a normal qualifying, we would have started alongside Hamilton and could have had some better chances, so I think it’s just one race – and then in Canada, we crush them.”
The Spanish GP threatened a significant power shift as Aston Martin ever came close to the race pace of the Mercedes and finished a distant 40 seconds down on second-place Hamilton.
With upgrades in the pipeline, the order of second fastest car behind Red Bull might change hands again as the development race continues between Aston Martin, Ferrari and Mercedes.
Mercedes are also set to bring upgrades at the British GP in July as the field look to hunt down Red Bull.
Where is the next F1 2023 race?
With the F1 circus finished in Spain, the next race is the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix which will be held at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal over the weekend of June 16-18.
