Fernando Alonso lifts lid on Lance Stroll relationship at Aston Martin

Fernando Alonso outscored Lance Stroll 206 points to 74 in the 2023 F1 season

Fernando Alonso bared all about his relationship as Aston Martin teammates with Lance Stroll and revealed he’s been impressed by the Canadian’s commitment to improve in a difficult season.

Alonso scored almost 75% of Aston Martin‘s points in the 2023 Formula 1 season as the team improved to fifth in the constructors’ championship after finishing seventh in 2022.

The team scored six times as many points as the previous season but while Alonso claimed eight podiums, Stroll never visited the rostrum and only finished in the top five twice.

“It’s been very good. I think we have a very unique relationship [compared to] any team that I’ve worked for and in any team that I know in the current paddock,” Alonso told the media at the 2023 Abu Dhabi GP.

“We talk a lot, we’re in contact every week on the phone, at the factory, at races and we try to make sure that we are all in the same direction, we share so many things.”

Stroll’s surprising commitment

Stroll‘s underperformance compared to Alonso was a key factor in Aston Martin missing out on fourth place in the constructors championship by just 22 points.

Alonso beat Lando Norris in the drivers’ standings, but Stroll was well behind Oscar Piastri despite a late-season surge. He managed two fifth-place finishes in the last three races and even outperformed Alonso at the Las Vegas GP.

That was after Stroll fought through the pain barrier to race at the Bahrain GP just two weeks after breaking his wrist and missing the whole of pre-season testing.

“He’s been through some difficulties this year, the car was just changing behaviour a little bit and he was just struggling a little bit more than me,” Alonso said. “And now we’ve fixed a few things in the car, and he’s back to top form.

“It was impressive to see his dedication and his motivation in the highs and the lows, at the beginning of the year with a broken hand and then through the season he was so determined to put things back in place again.

“And eventually he did after I think Mexico, the race in Brazil, the race in Vegas. And to be honest this was a surprise to me, the level of commitment and the level of motivation that he has. So you know, this is only good news and good things for the team.”
