Alex Albon ‘worried’ about Daniel Ricciardo after Mexico City GP

Alex Albon secured a ninth place finish for Williams at the 2023 Mexico City GP

Alex Albon has admitted that the pace of the AlphaTauri cars at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix is something to worry about from his and his Williams team’s perspective.

Albon produced another fine drive on Sunday in Mexico City to earn points for Williams as he finished ninth, but he was outscored by Daniel Ricciardo, who had a stellar weekend to finish seventh in the AlphaTauri, and could have been beaten by Yuki Tsunoda before the Japanese driver fell down the order following a tangle with Oscar Piastri.

“Daniel’s pace is something to be a bit worried about,” Albon said to the press after the chequered flag in Mexico City.

“They had a double points finish today, or they should have had. They only need another finish like that [to be close to us.] We still need to keep our heads down and try and finish high up.”

It was a standout weekend for the Faenza squad, following on from a good result in Austin at the 2023 US GP, and in the fight for seventh place in the constructors’ championship looks as though it’s AlphaTauri that the momentum ahead of the final three races of the F1 season.

Constructors’ battle tightens

Albon’s teammate Logan Sargeant was on course for a 12th place finish in Mexico before having to retire on the final lap thanks to a fuel pump issue in his Williams.

Elsewhere in the battle for seventh in the constructor standings, Alfa Romeo saw a lack of race pace cost them a top 10 finish with either car, despite starting in those positions at the beginning of the Grand Prix.

Meanwhile, the Haas cars also failed to score as Nico Hulkenberg eventually dropped out of the top 10 and Kevin Magnussen crashed out, with the Dane given the all clear after a quick visit to the medical centre.
