Alex Albon delighted to hear of Ferrari rumours

The Thai driver has been the shining light of Williams this season and it has got other teams interested

Alex Albon has reassured the Formula 1 world that any potential move from Williams to Ferrari is purely rumoured at this stage.

The Thai driver has scored 100 per cent of Williams‘ points this season and could have scored loads more without an unforced crash at the Australian Grand Prix when running sixth.

His stellar season behind the wheel had some media outlets reporting that Ferrari were interested in him replacing Carlos Sainz at Maranello and Albon was pleased to hear the rumours, despite no truth being attached to them.

“Good rumours are always nice,” Albon told the media ahead of the Hungarian GP. “I think that just highlights that the year is going well so far.

“I’m happy to hear those things, of course, but they are only rumours.”

Lawson’s time will come

Albon’s former team, AlphaTauri, replaced Nyck de Vries with Daniel Ricciardo in the break between Silverstone and the Hungaroring but they chose not to bring in Liam Lawson, who is thought to be next in line off the Red Bull conveyor belt.

Albon actually thinks this is a smart move from the Red Bull stable and believes Lawson will get into F1 soon if Ricciardo moves up to the main team.

“I’m sure his time will come,” Albon added. “I’m confident he’s going to have a seat in F1 soon.

“To put him in now would be tough for him because he would be coming in as a rookie halfway through a season when you’ve got a driver next to you who is in very good form.

“So I think it’s not a silly decision to put Daniel in there as someone who’s already got experience and doesn’t need such a big learning curve.”
