Alex Albon would rather ‘stay at home’ than avoid risks despite Williams chassis fears

Williams have no spare chassis for the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix

-

The extent of the issues at Williams became apparent when they revealed they do not have the resources to fund a spare Formula 1 chassis, but Alex Albon has refused to drive cautiously adding they should “stay at home” if they can’t go racing.

It’s thought that the low-budget British team won’t be able to introduce a chassis until the 2024 Miami Grand Prix weekend on May 6, meaning they will have to navigate the Chinese GP knowing that a big crash could see the driver, or probably just Logan Sargeant, miss the weekend.

For Albon, however, the added risk and jeopardy isn’t going to make him drive under the limit, even if Williams insist that the drivers have to be extra cautious, as the team looks to score any point possible from towards the back of the F1 grid.

“You go about your racing not really thinking about it, if I’m totally honest,” Albon said to media ahead of the Chinese GP. “Obviously it’s there, but the moment that you start to think about the lack of parts – or the lack of whatever – you might as well stay home.

“You have got to attack the weekend like you do any other weekend. You can’t treat it any differently. You’ve got to be on the limit to feel what the limit is, and you’ve got to get a balance for the car.

“It’s one of those ones where you do have to kind of part block your brain and just go about racing as normal.”

Albon praises Williams’ spirit and desire

So, with one hour of practice, two races and two qualifying sessions, the drivers will be testing the limits far more often than usual at a track they haven’t raced at since 2019, creating a significant hike the risk of an accident.

And the Williams drivers have been remarkably crash prone in 2024. Whilst this isn’t that out of character for Sargeant based on his 2023 season, it is for Albon who crashed in both Australia and on Lap 1 in Japan, although the latter wasn’t really his fault.  As a result, the Thai-British racer is full of praise for a Williams outfit rallying together in trying times.

“It’s been a tremendous effort,” Albon added. “Obviously we’ve been on the backfoot with the crashes, and it is no secret that we were already on the back foot before the crashes.

“So it’s another mighty job as always and we have to rely on the staff back at Grove to pull things together, as they continuously do so. And it is very, very important, especially coming into a sprint race as well, with all the possibilities of whatever can happen this weekend.

“You want to be as best prepared as possible. Races like this, where it’s so unknown, are an opportunity for teams like us.”
