Oscar Piastri reveals hilarious reason behind post-race dance in Miami

McLaren star admits his ‘griddy’ celebration was the result of a bet with NFL wide receiver Justin Jefferson

Oscar Piastri may have dominated the track at the 2025 Miami Grand Prix, but it was his dance celebration off the circuit that sparked conversation across the Formula 1 world.

Following a clinical drive to victory — his fourth of the 2025 season — the McLaren driver delighted fans with an uncharacteristic dance move in parc fermé.

Piastri, usually calm and reserved, broke out into the now-iconic ‘griddy’ dance, a celebration move popularised in American football.

While fans were initially puzzled by the display, the Australian soon clarified the reason behind his performance: a lighthearted bet made with NFL superstar Justin Jefferson.

Speaking after the race, Piastri explained, “It was an attempt at a griddy. As you can tell, poorly executed. I met Justin Jefferson on Thursday who has essentially made the griddy world famous and I stupidly made a bet with him that if I won the race I’d do one for him.”

The ‘griddy’, a dance that went viral through the NFL thanks to Jefferson’s touchdown celebrations, had never been attempted by an F1 driver on live television.

But Piastri stuck to his word after a dominant win, which saw him fend off teammate Lando Norris and Mercedes’ George Russell.

Why Piastri danced — and why it probably won’t happen again

Despite winning from fourth on the grid and extending his championship lead to 131 points, Piastri was more nervous about his celebration than the race itself.

“After qualifying yesterday… I thought that it was definitely not going to be needed,” Piastri admitted, referencing his initial doubts about winning.

“So that was my first attempt at a griddy live on world TV,” Piastri continued. “I stayed true to the bet but that’s the one and only time you’re going to see me doing that.”

The gesture didn’t go unnoticed. Jefferson responded on social media with enthusiasm, posting: “OSCARRRRRR!!! LETS GOOOOO.” The wide receiver, who attended the Miami GP and joined Piastri for a hot lap earlier in the weekend, seemed to relish the F1-NFL crossover moment.

Jefferson had challenged Piastri to do the dance before the Miami race weekend, joking: “No one has ever done it in racing. You’ll be the first one.” the McLaren driver gamely agreed — and followed through in unforgettable fashion.

The moment brought levity to a tense weekend and added a human touch to Piastri’s increasingly clinical performances.

With four wins in six races and a growing gap in the standings over teammate Norris and Max Verstappen, Piastri is not just emerging as a title contender — he’s becoming a fan favourite too.
