Following a dramatic and eventful opening practice session, attention now turns to FP2 at the F1 2025 Monaco GP, brought to you live from Total-Motorsport.com! Can Charles Leclerc continue his strong start in front of a passionate home crowd?
The initial practice session was where teams and drivers look to build momentum around the sport’s most iconic and unforgiving Circuit de Monaco and the streets proved just treacherous as ever, catching out several of the grid’s best. Leclerc’s brush with the barriers and a collision with Lance Stroll were just two of many incidents, as drivers struggled to find rhythm on a narrow track, which was full of impeding incidents.
Max Verstappen was left fuming after being blocked by a Sauber, while Lewis Hamilton suffered a heavy hit on the sausage kerbs at Turn 15-16, momentarily launching his Ferrari into the air, after becoming distracted too. McLaren’s duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri showed strong early pace and will be key contenders this weekend, with the Aussie leading the championship standings and Norris not far behind.
But in Monaco, qualifying performance is everything, and FP2 represents the final chance for teams to refine their low-fuel setups ahead of the all-important Saturday showdown in an hour crucial for gathering long-run data, assessing tyre degradation, and dialling in setups. With overtaking nearly impossible here, a clean and productive session could make the difference between a front-row start and a midfield struggle so who will build upon their momentum on Friday?
Will Leclerc keep the good mood going for Ferrari? Can Verstappen step up from a solid FP1? Will McLaren’s strong form continue to shine? Stay tuned for all the latest updates, incidents, and lap-time drama as FP2 gets underway at the F1 2025 Monaco GP.

CHEQUERED FLAG: Leclerc tops FP2 as perfect weekend continues
Charles Leclerc has opened his weekend at the F1 2025 Monaco GP with a perfect start as the Ferrari driver tops FP2, hours after he topped FP1, with a 1:11.355 to beat Oscar Piastri by 0.038 and Lewis Hamilton in third.
Are the Scuderia in contention this weekend? That remains to be seen, but on the basis of Friday then it’s a very good start for them.
Drivers will shoot around for some practice starts before heading into the pits at the end of the following lap.
Five minutes to go: Leclerc continues at the top
Charles Leclerc’s time continues to hold up for Ferrari at the summit of the FP2 board, as his 1:11.355 leads Oscar Piastri by 0.038, with Lewis Hamilton close behind in third. The seven-time world champion is 0.105 back.
Are they in the mix this weekend? Leclerc set his time on the hard tyres, which would suggest he’s running a higher power unit mode otherwise the rest of the teams should pack it up and go home.
Norris is fourth, then comes Lawson, Hadjar, Alonso, Albon, Antonelli and Verstappen in a very unconventional Top 10 in Monaco.
Seven minutes to go: Verstappen momentarily stuck
Max Verstappen goes too deep into Turn 1 and takes to the escape road to wisely avoid a crash.
However, his Red Bull RB21 seems reluctant to pull down the gears to get to reserve.
In the end, he gets going and is back into the action. He’s currently 10th overall, that’s concerning for the star’s weekend prospects.
11 minutes to go: Hadjar hits the wall again
Isack Hadjar hits the wall once again at the Circuit de Monaco, and he seems as though he may have suspenion damage from the accident.
It seems as though his afternoon will be over after tagging the wall at the exit of Turn 1 after a snap of oversteer.
“Mate I am so stupid. I’m just so dumb,” Hadjar bemoans over the radio.
14 minutes to go: Are Ferrari favourites?
Charles Leclerc leads FP2 with a 1:11.355 to top the timing boards ahead of Lewis Hamilton, in the second Ferrari, who is 0.105 back.
That’s very good stuff from Ferrari, could they be the team to beat this weekend? They’ve had an edge over McLaren and Red Bull throughout.
This could be a golden chance for them to win.
18 minutes to go: Very impressive time from Lawson
Liam Lawson jumps his Racing Bull up to third late into this FP2 session at the F1 2025 Monaco GP.
Do they have more pace than they’re letting on? Or have they simply turned up the engines for a glory run? It always looks good for the sponsors.
He’s 0.468 off Charles Leclerc’s time, competitive with the McLaren of Lando Norris. Good stuff.
22 minutes to go: Very cautious lap from Piastri
Oscar Piastri’s first fast lap back in FP2 is a very cautious one as the McLaren driver builds his confidence back up after that early crash.
He’s currently eighth fastest overall, just behind Red Bull’s Max Verstappen.
25 minutes to go: Charles Leclerc is on it
Charles Leclerc knows these streets like the back of his hands having grown up here for his entire life and that’s certainly showing in FP2 in Monte Carlo.
The Ferrari star delivers a 1:11.355 on the softs to top the timing boards ahead of Lando Norris by 0.482.
He’s put six tenths on his teammate, who is Lewis Hamilton by the way. Impressive stuff from him. He seems to be a contender.
28 minutes to go: Oldies trading times
Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso have a combined age of 83 but the pair are proving age is just a number as they top the timing boards in FP2 at the F1 2025 Monaco GP.
Hamilton briefly goes fastest for Ferrari ahead of Alonso, before the Aston Martin then snatches top spot away with a 1:11.890 on the softs.
The infamous 2007 rivals are showing they’ve still got speed to burn when they need it.
32 minutes to go: Piastri back in action in Monte Carlo
McLaren’s Oscar Piastri caused the third red flag of the weekend at the F1 2025 Monaco GP when he entered Turn 1 too hot on the brakes and chose to commit instead of bailing out.
Breaking his front-wing, he headed back to the pit lane with a slice of humble pie on his mind as Monaco bites the Australian back.
But Sky Sports F1’s Ted Kravitz reports the front nosecone of his MCL39 has been fixed and he can get back into this FP2 session to work on his set-up.
Will that crash affect his confidence?
GREEN FLAG: The session is back underway and Verstappen’s already angry
The marshals have fixed up the crash barriers at the Circuit de Monaco and the cars are back running, and Max Verstappen is already far from impressed with the rest of the grid in the city he lives in.
He comes across Yuki Tsunoda and a Sauber on his fast lap through the Swimming Pool Chicane and has to sharply use his keen reactions to avoid a crash, startled by the traffic.
He brands the impeding “unacceptable” over the radio, despite the fact that it’s only practice and not a competitive session.
The Dutchman is currently eighth overall.
Your order under the red flag
Moments before Oscar Piastri found he wall in the McLaren, Charles Leclerc had delivered an astonishing lap to beat the Australian McLaren driver’s time by 0.455 to move to the top of the standings.
His 1:12.103 moves him safely clear of the pack in what was an inspired lap from the home hero.
The Top 10: Leclerc, Piastri, Antonelli, Russell, Hamilton, Gasly, Verstappen, Norris, Albon and Alonso.
There’s 35 minutes left on the clock as the marshals fix up the damage at Turn 1 in Monaco.
RED FLAG: Piastri crashes in Turn 1
That’s the second big mistake of the season from Oscar Piastri as he outbrakes himself into Turn 1 and hits the wall, smashing his front wing.
He committed to the corner instead of the safer option of bailing out and that’s a one-way ticket to the wall. He manages to reverse out and returns to the pit lane to let his team inspect the damage.
The Australian is currently in second behind Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari, but how will that affect his confidence ahead of the rest of the F1 2025 Monaco GP weekend?
There’s around 38 minutes left on the clock, which continues to tick down.
Verstappen swaps his helmet
Max Verstappen already complained about the visibility from his crash helmet before the session started and he used the red flag as a golden chance to swap it out.
He insists something was wrong with the tear-off quality and Red Bull tell him they will check it out throughout the night.
The Dutchman currently leads the timing boards with a 1:12.922 ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri, with Charles Leclerc down in third some 0.240 back.
GREEN FLAG: Session resumes after Hadjar crash
The accident has already been cleared up and we are ready to get running again, a testament to how efficient the marshals are at the Circuit de Monaco.
Nico Hulkenberg’s Sauber is the first car back out on track, the German keen to make up for the lost time in Monte Carlo.
There is 46 minutes left on the clock.
Smart from Hadjar after crash
After hitting the wall, Isack Hadjar immediately catches the car to stop it from heading straight into the barriers at the exit of the corner.
It was a save that might keep him in FP2, but so is his mature driving afterwards. He slows all the way down and crawls back to the pits to prevent any floor damage to his Racing Bulls car.
Still under red flag with 49 minutes to go.
RED FLAG: Hadjar hits the wall
Isack Hadjar hits the wall at the entry of the Nouvelle Chicane at the Circuit de Monaco and the 20-year-old is absolutely furious with himself.
He’s slowly trying to make his way back to the pits, can Racing Bulls get that car fixed and sent back out? There could be gearbox damage…
The red flag is out with 52 minutes on the clock, which will not stop ticking down as all cars return to the pit-lane.
Lance Stroll is in FP2
Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll will participate in FP2 at the F1 2025 Monaco GP after the diffuser damage he received when he moved in front of Charles Leclerc far too late.
He picked up a one-place grid-drop penalty for the moment and now bids to reset and go again in Monte Carlo.
He’s currently 15th and 1.709 seconds off the pace of Max Verstappen.
It’s a packed out venue in Monaco
The most prestigious and glamorous race in Formula 1 history for a reason, it’s no surprise at all that the grand stands are packed out and filled up.
The fans are even spilling over into the balconies of nearby flats and apartments. Can Charles Leclerc make the locals happy once again?
GREEN FLAG: FP2 begins at the Circuit de Monaco
The pit exit opens and cars can head out to the Circuit de Monaco to kick off FP2 at the F1 2025 Monaco GP.
This is a big hour for all of the teams as they aim to lock in their set-ups and the teams can sense the urgency in the air.
There’s already a big queue in the pits to get out, including the Sauber trying to budge its way in.
A lucky escape for Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton could count himself lucky he didn’t crash out of FP1 on two occasions within the same corner as he tested just how sturdy his Ferrari SF-25 is.
Remember, Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc suffered very similar crashes in 2018 and 2021.
Was it simply good car control from the seven-time world champion?
What are Williams cooking?
Williams showed excellent pace once again for the third Formula 1 weekend in a row as they look to continue trying to take the fight to the lead four teams, McLaren, Red Bull, Mercedes and Ferrari.
In FP1 they finished fourth with Alex Albon delivering another superb lap, whilst Carlos Sainz was also in the Top 10 as he finished half-a-second off Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari in seventh.
Can they take a big step forwards in FP2 to prove that they’re a force to be reckoned with once again?
The world champions get in the practice
A slick pit-stop in Monaco is essentially to race prospects, offering the chance to gain a rare position or even lose the race win if you were to ask Daniel Ricciardo and Valtteri Bottas about it.
So it’s no surprise that McLaren, the constructors’ champions, are making sure they’re double checking if those wheel guns are working properly.
Look at them go below:
Check out the Monaco margin of error
Talent or luck? Either way, George Russell didn’t leave himself a lot of room o the barriers at Turn 1 in FP1 – almost tagging the wall as he escaped by four centimetres.
He will not want to do that too often, a whack with the wall could give him a puncture which would spell disaster if it happens in Saturday’s qualifying or Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix.
BREAKING: Lance Stroll handed grid penalty for F1 2025 Monaco GP
Lance Stroll caused a very avoidable crash with Charles Leclerc just eight minutes into FP1 when he moved late back to the racing line in the hairpin and caused the Ferrari to rear end his Aston Martin.
It ended his hour of running and leaves him already down on a weekend when set-up is vital, and now he pays a hefty price by earning himself a one-place grid drop penalty for the incident.
Qualifying is absolutely key in Monaco and with that penalty hanging over his head for the remainder of the weekend, it could potentially count him out of the points.
