F1 Hungarian GP 2025 Free Practice 3 LIVE: Latest Updates
CHEQUERED FLAG: McLaren dominate ahead of qualifying
Oscar Piastri holds a slender edge over Lando Norris heading into qualifying with the two McLarens poised for an exclusively battle for pole, boasting a mammoth gap to Charles Leclerc in third.
The Ferrari driver was best of the rest but still 0.399 off the papaya-coloured pair, in what is a damning judgement of the field’s pace compared to the constructors’ championship leaders ahead of qualifying.
He headed Lewis Hamilton at the Hungaroring, so don’t count out the seven-time world champion at a circuit where he has taken eight poles in the past.
More from the Singapore GP
Catch up with Total Motorsport's latest Singapore GP coverage, including Max Verstappen's victory at Marina Bay, Ferrari's costly strategy gamble, the full race classification, and the updated 2026 Formula 1 Drivers' and Constructors' Championship standings.
Meanwhile Red Bull and Max Verstappen? They have a shocking gap to make up compared to their rivals. They’re over a second off the pace and aren’t even in the Top 10.
6 minutes to go: Norris goes again
Lando Norris goes for a second effort on his soft tyres but it doesn’t do him too much good and he’s unable to make a dent on Oscar Piastri’s time.
It seems like it’s going to be one lap or nothing for each set of softs. Norris finishes the lap almost half-a-second down on his teammate.
TOP 10: Piastri, Norris, Leclerc, Hamilton, Antonelli, Alonso, Stroll, Russell, Bortoleto, Hulkenberg and Bearman.
9 minutes to go: Aston Martin looking good
Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll has put in another solid lap today to go seventh quickest and he’s joined by his teammate, Fernando Alonso, who is sixth.
The team seems to have found some pace this weekend, but can they translate it over into qualifying?
Find out later today.
11 minutes to go: Big spin for Hadjar
Isack Hadjar gets it all wrong at the exit of the second-to-last corner and goes for a cheeky spin at the Hungaroring.
He keeps the car out of the wall for Racing Bulls and continues on his merry way, slightly embarrassed by the moment.
The French-Algerian rookie is currently running in 17th, but is ahead of his teammate.
13 minutes to go: Shocking lap from Verstappen
Is it 2015 again? Max Verstappen is over a second off the pace in his Red Bull RB21, 1.2 seconds down on Oscar Piastri’s time for McLaren.
He can only go 10th fastest and is even behind the Sauber pair. Is it going to be a very long weekend for the four-time world champion?
16 minutes to go: McLaren drop the hammer
Let’s see how the rest react to this challenge but that is quite the statement from Oscar Piastri and McLaren, who improves by almost an entire second to put up a 1:14.916 on the board.
Lewis Hamilton is the first to react and he’s now 0.768 back from the Australian, although he had a scruffy final sector.
Lando Norris, meanwhile, cannot displace his teammate. He’s +0.032 down but set a purple sector in the final sector. It’s close between the title protagonists.
28 minutes to go: Lewis Hamilton 👀
Lewis Hamilton gets his Ferrari up to second after smashing the final sector, with the Brit now just 0.144 down from Oscar Piastri’s McLaren at the summit of the times.
The seven-time world champion is 0.122 ahead of his teammate, Charles Leclerc, and does tend to go well at the Hungaroring…
Is he in the picture for pole at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix?
32 minutes to go: Verstappen back in the mix?
Max Verstappen seems as though he might be back in the mix at the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix as he sneaks just behind Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari by under a tenth.
He’s ahead of Lando Norris, but McLaren might be too far away as Oscar Piastri moves to be 0.331 clear of the Dutchman with a 1:15.871 on the soft tyre.
Red Bull will have changed a lot on that car overnight.
36 minutes to go: Piastri assumes slender lead
There’s surely more to come from the McLaren pair around the Hungaroring as Oscar Piastri’s 1:16:240 pips George Russell by just 0.072 in the Mercedes.
Lando Norris has traffic on his lap and has to abort, leaving him around half-a-second off the pace of his teammate.
So the pair haven’t really flexed their muscles just yet…
40 minutes to go: Verstappen takes over at the top
Max Verstappen now goes to the top of the times on the soft tyre with a 1:16.547 as Red Bull lead the way, before McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes come out to play.
The defending champion leads Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin by 0.270, with Nico Hulkenberg in third. Yuki Tsunoda has been shuffled down to fourth.
44 minutes to go: Tsunoda leads the times
Yuki Tsunoda is the first of the leading drivers to put a time up on the board as he delivers a 1:17.022 in his Red Bull.
It’s a rare moment for the Japanese racer to top the times, but encouraging for the young racer, Laurent Mekies and his team.
The bigger guns are coming out now. Expect to see Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri go at it soon.
48 minutes to go: Colapinto leads the times
It’s a 1:18.006 for Franco Colapinto, who gets the honour of seeing his name at the summit of the timing boards on the soft tyre.
It’s not going to be a competitive time compared to what the McLarens and front runners will put on the board later today.
Whenever they decide to hit the track, that is…
50 minutes to go: Zero times on the board
Nobody has set a competitive lap so far as they look to protect their tyres and their cars from unnecessary running ahead of of qualifying later on this Saturday.
Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson in the Racing Bulls garage haven’t even got their crash helmets on, with the former sitting down sipping a drink.
Franco Colapinto has just started a push lap for Alpine, however.
GREEN FLAG: FP3 begins in Hungary
It’s another slow start to FP3 in this 2025 Formula 1 season as some drivers come out, scrub a set of the hard tyres, and come back into the pits.
The running will properly get going soon with both the Aston Martins of Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso the only cars out there at the moment.
Can anyone catch McLaren after their dominant showing on Friday?
