F1 2025 Hungarian GP – Free Practice 1 Results

Norris puts McLaren on top as rookies and stand-ins impress in first practice

-

The 2025 Hungarian GP Free Practice 1 Results saw Lando Norris continue his impressive form by topping the timesheets at the Hungaroring, leading a dominant McLaren one-two from Oscar Piastri. Charles Leclerc slotted into third for Ferrari, while the session featured several talking points, including a late driver change at Aston Martin and rookie opportunities up and down the field.

Before the session even started, Aston Martin confirmed that Fernando Alonso would sit out FP1 due to a muscular back injury. His absence allowed reserve driver Felipe Drugovich to make his first appearance of the season. Sauber also handed a second rookie outing to Paul Aron, who replaced Nico Hulkenberg for the opening hour. These changes, along with a technical problem for Pierre Gasly’s Alpine early on, ensured a busy start to proceedings in Budapest.

Once running got underway, Lewis Hamilton—an eight-time Hungarian GP winner—was first on track for Ferrari, but it was the McLaren duo that quickly set the standard. Despite briefly being usurped by Leclerc on the timing screens, Norris soon reclaimed top spot, eventually clocking a 1m 16.052s on the soft tyres. This lap was just 0.019s faster than teammate Piastri, with the Ferrari of Leclerc a further two tenths adrift.

McLaren set the early pace

Behind the lead trio, Isack Hadjar shone for Racing Bulls by finishing fourth, edging out Hamilton, who was left searching for answers after being over a second down on his former team.

Ollie Bearman put his Haas in a strong sixth, while Mercedes had both Kimi Antonelli and George Russell inside the top eight as the team reverted to an older suspension layout for the weekend. Max Verstappen could only manage ninth in the Red Bull, with Lance Stroll rounding out the top 10 for Aston Martin.

Further down the order, Alex Albon finished just outside the top 10 for Williams, followed by Esteban Ocon’s Haas, Gasly, and Liam Lawson in the second Racing Bulls entry. Carlos Sainz was 15th for Williams, while substitute Drugovich managed 16th on his return. Yuki Tsunoda’s session never really got going as he placed 17th for Red Bull, ahead of Franco Colapinto in the Alpine.

At the tail end, Gabriel Bortoleto spent the final moments of FP1 in the garage with his Sauber up on stands, placing 19th, and rookie Aron rounded out the field after his car stopped on track with a technical issue after just nine laps.

With FP1 complete, teams and drivers will now pore over the data to find improvements ahead of the second session, as the 2025 Hungarian Grand Prix weekend begins to take shape with McLaren in ominous form.
