F1 British GP 2025 Qualifying LIVE: Latest Silverstone Updates

Verstappen stuns Silverstone with third career pole here

Max Verstappen proved to be the difference maker on a competitive day at the F1 2025 British GP as the defending world champion roared back from disappointment in Austria to take an impressive pole at Silverstone.

His 1:24.892 was good enough to beat McLaren’s Oscar Piastri by 0.103 and now all eyes turn to Sunday, where the four-time world drivers’ champion looks to take his third victory of the season.

“It was tricky out there with the wind. It was shifting around a bit,” Verstappen told F1 TV. “These cars are extremely sensitive to it. That final lap was good enough.

Catch up with Total Motorsport's latest Singapore GP coverage, including Max Verstappen's victory at Marina Bay, Ferrari's costly strategy gamble, the full race classification, and the updated 2026 Formula 1 Drivers' and Constructors' Championship standings.

“This is a proper track when you have to go flat out. You have to be really committed and it’s really enjoyable. We are quite quick on the straight. We have to wait to see what tomorrow will do and if there’s rain around or not.

“I’m happy with qualifying. It’s a big boost for the team as well and I’m excited to go racing tomorrow. We’ll try. We are going to go racing. We are going to have fun and try to do the best we can.”

Piastri rues missed chances

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri momentarily claimed provisional pole before being usurped by Max Verstappen and admits he had a messy final run as he slipped behind the Red Bull.

Trying to chase extra time, he reveals he overcompensated in his bid to stay ahead of the chasing pack and it seems to have cost the championship leader dear, although he can make up for it on Sunday.

“I was happy with my first lap. The first lap was mega, to be honest,” Piastri said to F1 TV. “I was trying to think how I could go quicker and I didn’t.

“The last lap was a little bit messy but it’s been tight all weekend. A little bit on table. The car has felt mega all weekend but there’s been a few points all weekend scratching our head while we are not quicker.”

He added: “There were a couple of corners where maybe I was a bit safe on the way in and tried to make up for it on the way out, but it didn’t quite work.”

Norris surprisingly upbeat after missing out on pole

A slight mistake into the Vale chicane saw Lando Norris miss out on pole by a fractional margin of just over a tenth as he took too much kerb on the entry and unsettled his McLaren.

However, the championship hopeful isn’t actually disappointed. So why is the 25-year-old feeling positive ahead of Sunday’s 2025 British Grand Prix?

“A good qualifying. I’m not going to be unhappy with third,” Norris told F1 TV. “Though I’d love to be on top here at Silverstone. Max did a good job. Not quick enough today for us, but it’s going to be fun.

“Qualifying here is fast and enjoyable. Still a good day. Little margins. Little mistakes. A couple of hundredths here and there can win or lose you the game today.

“I think it’s going to be fun tomorrow. I think it’s going to be a good battle between the three of us – or probably more with Lewis, Charles and George. It’s going to be an interesting Sunday. I’m looking forward to it.”

MAX VERSTAPPEN TAKES POLE FOR F1 2025 BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Oscar Piastri can’t improve, Lando Norris wastes his chance at pole and Lewis Hamilton also misses out on the top spot for Sunday’s British Grand Prix but the one man who holds it together just enough?

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen delivers the best lap of the bunch and takes pole position at Silverstone as the Dutchman hands himself a golden chance to take his third victory of the season on July 6.

Fantastic stuff from the defending four-time world champion!

Pole: Max Verstappen – Piastri, Norris, Russell, Hamilton, Leclerc, Antonelli, Bearman (has a 10-place grid drop), Alonso and Gasly round out the Top 10.

Final runs begin: Can Hamilton take pole at British GP?

Lewis Hamilton has a golden chance to take his first pole position in Formula 1 since the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix, but to do so he must beat Oscar Piastri – who currently occupies top spot.

Challenges may also come from Max Verstappen and Lando Norris, as well as his own Ferrari teammate in the form of Charles Leclerc. Can he do it?

Stay tuned with Total-Motorsport.com.

Q3 BEGINS: Who will take pole position for the F1 2025 British Grand Prix?

Drivers now have just 10 minutes to get their best times on the board and it’s not a great start to the session for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who is only able to put up a 1:25.167 and drops nearly three tenths behind Oscar Piastri.

Lando Norris also gets ahead of the Dutchman to make it a McLaren 1-2 for a brief moment before Lewis Hamilton gets onto the front row, what a lap from the Ferrari!

Provisional pole goes to Oscar Piastri by 0.135 ahead of Hamilton, then comes Norris, Verstappen, Leclerc, Russell, Alonso, Bearman, Antonelli and Gasly.

Q2 ends: Double Williams exit at home Grand Prix

Ferrari manage to land a 1-2 to top Q2 with Lewis Hamilton ahead of Charles Leclerc by 0.049, but the main interest is towards the bottom of the order as we find out who dips out of qualifying.

And it’s not good reading for fans of Williams as both Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz bow out early, along with Red Bull’s Yuki Tsunoda and Haas’ Esteban Ocon.

Out in Q2: Ocon (15th), Albon, Tsunoda, Hadjar and Sainz.

Five minutes to go: Who is in danger of Q2 elimination?

Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are masters of the Silverstone circuit, but as things stand, they will be heading for an early shower at the 2025 British GP.

They’re running in 11th and 13th as this terrible SF-25 Ferrari car continues to struggle, with the team seeming lost for answers. Both drivers have one final run coming up.

Impossible to split Piastri and Verstappen!

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri sets exactly the same lap-time as Red Bull’s Max Verstappen with a 1:25.316, who now share second and third as Lando Norris goes quicker by 0.085.

Then comes George Russell, Fernando Alonso, Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon, Isack Hadjar, Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon in the Top 10.

Both Ferrari cars are in serious trouble with Lewis Hamilton in 11th and Charles Leclerc in 13th, with Kimi Antonelli between them for Mercedes. Rounding out the bottom of the order are Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda.

Q2 BEGINS: Will Ferrari get their act together?

Ferrari opted not to fuel Lewis Hamilton for consecutive runs on a track that was rapidly evolving, meaning his fate was out of his hands at the end of Q1 but the seven-time world champion just about managed to sneak through.

They’ll need to get it together in Q2 to avoid further embarrassment as they have 14 minutes to get their best times on the board now.

Reminder: Out in Q1 – Lawson (16th), Bortoleto, Stroll, Hulkenberg, Colapinto.

OUT IN Q1: Lewis Hamilton survives shocking exit

Ferrari’s Ricciardo Adami pitted Lewis Hamilton when he was far from same in another inexplicable decision from that pit-wall but fortunately the seven-time world champion manages to sneak through to the second part of Q2 by a narrow, narrow margin.

He will get to go again in qualifying for the F1 2025 British GP and he will hope is engineer is a bit more dialled in on what’s going on in Silverstone…

Out in Q1: Lawson (16th), Bortoleto, Stroll, Hulkenberg, Colapinto.

Two minutes to go: Who is at risk?

The bottom five spots are currently occupied by Pierre Gasly, Franco Colapinto, Liam Lawson, Nico Hulkenberg and Lance Stroll.

But some big names are in danger too including Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.

Hamilton, bizarrely, has just pitted. He won’t have time for another lap.

GREEN FLAG: Five minutes to go – Who will survive elimination?

The slowest four drivers will be dumped out of qualifying, with 20th on the grid likely to be occupied by Franco Colapinto after his Q1 crash and retirement from the session.

Who will make the cut? Will we see any shock exits?

Stay tuned with Total-Motorsport.com.

Session to resume at 15:21 local time in Silverstone

The barriers have been checked and repaired following Franco Colapinto’s crash for Alpine and we can get Q1 running again at the 2025 British GP.

Most drivers are at risk and with 06:49 on the clock, there’s not a lot of time left to get laps on the board. This could be a hectic finish to the first part of qualifying.

With Colapinto out of the session, he should qualify last and that means there are only four elimination spots to try to avoid in Silverstone.

Leader: Oscar Piastri.

Then comes: Verstappen, Alonso, Norris, Russell, Hamilton, Hadjar, Bearman, Leclerc, Albon, Sainz, Stroll, Antonelli, Lawson and Tsunoda.

In danger: Bortoleto, Ocon, Hulkenberg, Colapinto and Gasly.

RED FLAG: Colapinto crashes with seven minutes to go

Franco Colapinto crashes at the exit of the Vale chicane, getting too greedy with the throttle and losing the rear of his Alpine.

He tags the barriers but manages to keep his car going, but later has to pull over and retire.

He will start the 2025 British Grand Prix from no higher than 19th place, and that’s not good for his future within the team.

10 minutes to go: Big guns are on the board

Oscar Piastri is the quickest man at the end of the first runs with a 1:26.002 to lead Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 0.039 for McLaren.

Lando Norris is third, then comes George Russell, Lewis Hamilton, Isack Hadjar, Oliver Bearman, Charles Leclerc and Alex Albon in the Top 10.

They will all need to go again to make sure they’re safe, especially the Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli and Red Bull of Yuki Tsunoda, who are sitting 12th and 14th.

12 minutes to go: Verstappen sets the benchmark

Max Verstappen is flexing his muscles once again as he goes straight to the top of the times on his opening run with a 1:26.041 at Silverstone, pipping McLaren’s Lando Norris by 0.124.

Is he in play in this qualifying session at the F1 2025 British GP?

15 minutes to go: Bortoleto to the top of the times

Gabriel Bortoleto manages to get his Sauber out on track after that late crash in Free Practice 3 and the team seems to have done a good job.

The Brazilian rookie goes to the top of the times with a 1:27.475, ahead of Nico Hulkenberg who almost lost the rear of his car through the Vale chicane complex.

GREEN FLAG: Qualifying for the 2025 British Grand Prix begins!

It looks as though it could be a three-team fight for pole position between Ferrari, McLaren and Red Bull but first up is Q1…

Drivers have 18 minutes to get their best lap times on the board, and the slowest five will be eliminated.

Who will make the cut and who will miss out? Rain could also be a factor too…

Five minutes to go: Do not count out Max Verstappen

After a torrid time in Free Practice 2, it seems as though Red Bull have finally figured out their RB21 around Silverstone as Max Verstappen finished FP2 in third place, joined by Yuki Tsunoda in fifth.

Do not count out the four-time world champion from sprinkling some magic at the 2025 British GP as the Dutchman looks for his fourth pole position of the season.

Can he do it?

But can McLaren strike back?

Cooler temperatures usually see McLaren slip closer to the field over one lap and the same trend seems to be happening at the 2025 British GP compared to their dominant pace in Austria.

But do they have something in reserve? Both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will want pole position as they continue their battle for the F1 titles.

Will the papaya strike back?

Is pole position on the cards for Ferrari?

Ferrari have looked rapid all weekend at Silverstone as it seems their floor upgrade is working well on their SF-25 package, ahead of another update to the rear suspension – forecast for the Belgian GP.

Could Lewis Hamilton snag an eighth pole position at this famous circuit or can Charles Leclerc take his first ever one here?

The Tifosi will no doubt he cheering on both red cars passionately.

WATCH: Check out Bearman’s crash

This is the moment Oliver Bearman locked the rears and lost control of his Haas as he tried to slow for the pit-lane entry.

The Brit has earned a 10-place grid-drop for the 2025 British GP, not what he wanted in his first ever home race.

Can he fight back?

BREAKING: Grid drop penalty for Oliver Bearman

Oliver Bearman will take a 10-place grid-drop penalty for the 2025 British GP after failing to correctly follow red flag procedure.

The FIA found that he sped up to “race pace” levels of around 260kph as he entered the pit-lane, where he promptly lost control of his car and crashed.

That almost certainly means he will be starting Sunday’s race from last on the grid, or perhaps even from the pits if Haas choose to break Parc Ferme based on weather conditions or to run a full race set-up.

He also has four more penalty points on his FIA Super License, meaning he is now four away from being banned for a race.

Repair job at Sauber!

Gabriel Bortoleto’s late crash into Maggotts and Becketts puts his, and Sauber’s weekend, on the back foot at the 2025 British GP.

Can they get the car turned around in time for the start of qualifying?

The session begins at 15:00 local time in the United Kingdom.

Welcome to the blog!

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc proved to be the quickest man in qualifying, sparking a buzz that the Italians could be in the mix at the 2025 British GP – especially after Lewis Hamilton had to cancel a promising lap.

McLaren are right there, however, as are both Red Bull cars. So who will take pole at the historic Silverstone circuit?
