F1 2025 British GP – Free Practice 3 Results

Charles Leclerc underlines Ferrari’s pace with fastest lap in FP3 as Silverstone prepares for a dramatic qualifying session

-

Charles Leclerc put the final touches to his car at Silverstone and put the Ferrari top of the British GP 2025 Free Practice 3 results, just ahead of Oscar Piastri in the McLaren with Max Verstappen in the Red Bull third fastest in the third and final practice session of the F1 weekend.

Silverstone delivered the kind of drama and unpredictability that only this historic circuit can provide. With less than two-tenths separating the top four drivers and two red flags disrupting the session’s rhythm, the build-up to qualifying is filled with intrigue and tension.

The morning began under cooler, cloudier skies than Friday, with a gusty breeze adding yet another variable for teams to contend with. After a short delay to clean up marbles left by support series, it was the Alpine duo who first took to the track, checking overnight changes.

The session came alive when Lewis Hamilton set an early marker for Ferrari on soft tyres, clocking a 1:27.351 to the delight of the packed grandstands.

That benchmark was quickly lowered as drivers dialed in their cars. Hamilton improved on his second run, but it was Charles Leclerc who grabbed the headlines in the first half of the session, first edging Hamilton by just 0.035s, then lowering the fastest lap to a 1:25.922. Max Verstappen slotted between the Ferraris, despite voicing frustration about his brake-bias settings in the Red Bull.

McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri initially struggled to match their Friday pace, running longer stints with more fuel. But once on fresh soft tyres, the papaya duo surged to the front: Norris delighted the home crowd by posting a 1:25.606, only for Piastri to narrowly eclipse him by 0.04s moments later. Verstappen also squeezed between the two McLarens, but ultimately it was Leclerc who reclaimed P1 with a 1:25.498 as the final ten minutes approached.

Red Flags and Narrow Margins Tease a Wide-Open Qualifying

The session’s momentum was interrupted with just over five minutes to go when debris—later traced to Ollie Bearman’s Haas—brought out a red flag, aborting what looked to be a rapid lap from Hamilton, who had gone quickest in Sector 2 and was challenging for the top spot.

After a brief pause, action resumed, but there was time for only one more flying attempt before a second incident brought the session to a premature close. Gabriel Bortoleto lost control of his Sauber at Maggotts and Becketts, spinning into the gravel and snapping his suspension, which ensured the chequered flag was waved early.

As the dust settled, Leclerc remained on top, his late flyer holding off Piastri, Verstappen, and Norris—just 0.108s covering all four. Yuki Tsunoda impressed in fifth for Red Bull, while Bearman rebounded from his earlier mishap to claim sixth, despite a late error in the pit lane. Alex Albon put Williams back into the top ten, with George Russell the fastest of the Mercedes cars in a challenging session for the Brackley squad.

Hamilton, forced to abort his best lap, finished outside the top ten, while Carlos Sainz, Esteban Ocon, and rookie Kimi Antonelli also found themselves further down the order than expected. Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll, and Pierre Gasly rounded out the field on a day that saw Silverstone’s notorious weather and high-speed layout keep every team on their toes.

With qualifying looming, the stage is set for a fiercely contested pole shootout. Ferrari’s upgrades appear to be working, but with McLaren, Red Bull, and even Williams within striking distance, the battle for Silverstone supremacy remains wide open.
