F1 2025 British GP Free Practice 1: Hamilton quickest in FP1, Verstappen P10

McLaren and Ferrari expected to headline a dramatic opening session as home favourites and title rivals prepare for action at Silverstone

-

Hello and welcome to this Total Motorsport live blog for Free Practice 1 at the F1 2025 British GP from the iconic Silverstone circuit in the United Kingdom.

McLaren arrive as the team to beat, having established themselves as front-runners throughout the season. Championship leader Oscar Piastri and home hero Lando Norris will be looking to pick up where they left off, with the MCL39 expected to thrive on Silverstone’s sweeping layout.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton returns to Silverstone as a Ferrari driver for the first time, aiming to build on the momentum from recent car upgrades and a much-needed boost in form. After securing a popular win at last year’s British Grand Prix, Hamilton is determined to put on another show for the passionate home crowd.

With variable weather conditions predicted, teams and drivers will need to adapt quickly in the opening session. Rain remains a possibility, adding another layer of unpredictability as teams chase vital setup data and confidence ahead of qualifying and Sunday’s race. Total-Motorsport.com’s F1 2025 British GP live updates for Free Practice 1 will bring you real-time news, team developments, and the first on-track clues for the weekend ahead. Stay with us as we bring you all the latest from Silverstone.

End of FP1

Barring a few spins, an uneventful Free Practice 1 session comes to an end at Silverstone. There is a lot of the weekend still to come, but Ferrari will be happy with what they have seen so far. Lewis Hamilton tops the timing board with a 1:26.892, whilst Charles Leclerc slots into P4. The two McLaren’s of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, in that order, take P2 and P3, whilst George Russell is in P5.

Red Bull will not have enjoyed that, as Max Verstappen ends up in P10 and Arvin Lindblad is P14 on his debut. Lindblad’s performance does not need to be criticised, but in a bigger picture sense, both Racing Bulls finished ahead of the two Red Bulls.

9 minutes to go

Lewis Hamilton is now the fastest lap holder on the soft tyre with a 1:26.892, putting him slightly ahead of the two McLaren’s. Leclerc is in P4 right now, meaning some early pace is being shown by the Ferrari’s at Silverstone.

20 minutes to go

The next driver to suffer a big spin is Bortoleto. They’ve got two more practice sessions to get this right, but plenty of drivers are struggling to keep things neat and tidy, which could be a big factor come qualifying.

27 minutes to go

Max Verstappen and Lando Norris have moved onto the soft tyres already which means that the timing sheet is about to be shaken up. Norris goes to the top, whilst Verstappen is on an outlap. It hasn’t worked very well for Antonelli so far as he can only get to P9 on his first soft run.

35 minutes to go

As you’d expect, it’s been almost all medium-tyre running so far today, with a handful of cars on the hard tyre. Williams haven’t had a great start as both Albon and Sainz are currently in the garage, sitting P19 and P20. Sainz’s car is also having work done to it, with a curb potentially causing some damage.

47 minutes to go

Pierre Gasly has had a huge spin at the exit of Copse Corner and he’s very fortunate that the pirouette ended with him facing the right way and the engine still running. Those tyres will certainly need changing.

51 minutes to go

We have a couple of rookies on track in this session. Yuki Tsunoda has handed his Red Bull seat to Arvin Lindblad for FP1, whilst Nico Hulkenberg is not taking part with Estonian driver Paul Aron in his seat.

54 minutes to go

Lando Norris has put in the fastest lap in the first few minutes of FP1, treating the fans to a 1:28.645 in his McLaren. That time is quickly beaten by George Russell, though.

Cars on track soon

We’re just 10 minutes away from seeing the first action of the 2025 British Grand Prix, and there is no doubt that most of the focus right now is on the futures of George Russell and Max Verstappen. With Russell’s future at Mercedes being called into question, the best thing that he could do is win his home race.
