Hello and welcome to this Total Motorsport live blog for the F1 2025 Austrian Grand Prix from Spielberg, as the fight for Formula 1 victory heads to the dramatic backdrop of the Styrian hills in Spielberg.
Lando Norris claimed a commanding pole position at the Red Bull Ring for McLaren. The British driver’s lap of 1:03.971 put him more than half a second clear of the competition, the largest pole gap seen so far this season. Qualifying saw its fair share of twists, with a late spin from Pierre Gasly in his Alpine bringing out yellow flags that ruined the final flying laps for several key contenders.
Oscar Piastri, Norris’s McLaren teammate and current championship leader, was among those caught out, forced to settle for third after missing his last chance to challenge for pole. Gasly’s spin also compromised Max Verstappen in the Red Bull, ending his four-year streak of Austrian poles and leaving him down in seventh for the start of Sunday’s race.
Total-Motorsport.com’s F1 2025 Austrian Grand Prix live updates will keep you updated with every headline, sector time, and technical twist. Stay tuned for expert insight and up-to-the-minute coverage direct from the Red Bull Ring.

LANDO NORRIS WINS 2025 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX
Lando Norris does just enough to fend off Oscar Piastri and survive the lapped cars to win the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix and deliver the team their first victory at the Red Bull Ring since the Ron Dennis days back in 2001!
The Brit got very punchy with his teammate through the opening stint and served up some great drama but ultimately had the pace to beat the championship leader to the punch by a slender margin of 1.5 seconds!

WINNER: Norris. Then comes: Piastri, Leclerc, Hamilton, Russell, Lawson, Alonso, Bortoleto, Hulkenberg and Ocon.
FINAL LAP: Gap at 1.3
Lapped traffic puts Oscar Piastri to within 1.3 seconds of his teammate but is it going to be enough?
Will Lando Norris win this race or will the championship leader manage to snatch it?
Lap 69/70: Two to go!
Lando Norris looks as though he’s just doing enough to fight off Oscar Piastri to the chequered flag but he has to survive two more laps and lapped cars ahead.
Will the Brit win the 2025 Austrian GP or will Oscar Piastri get one chance to take a lunge on his McLaren teammate?
Lap 67/70: Norris warned about kerbs
Lando Norris has ran wide twice at Turn 1 and 3, rubbing up to the sausage kerbs and his engineer tells him that he needs to focus there.
Oscar Piastri is two seconds back, with lapped cars just up the road.
Could they make this finish spicy?
Lap 65/70: Norris extends gap to 2.0
The gap between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri is now back up to two seconds flat as they make their way through back markers.
Could that be enough for the Brit to win this Austrian Grand Prix?

Lap 64/70: Ferraris not a factor
This is a straight fight between Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris for the victory here in Austria.
Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are a mammoth 17.5 seconds and 25 seconds back respectively. George Russell isn’t too far away from being lapped!
The gloves are off at McLaren!
Lap 62/70: Gap to 1.6 seconds!
We are set for a thrilling finish between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri as the Aussie brings the gap down to 1.6 seconds in Spielberg. He’s so close to DRS!
Will the championship leader overtake his McLaren rival and extend his lead, or is he poised to see it take a dent?
The pair had a thrilling scrap in the first part of the race and it seems they’re going to end it in the same manner.
Lap 58/70: Norris losing time to Piastri
Despite that hairy moment for Oscar Piastri with Franco Colapinto, the Australian McLaren driver is hounding down Lando Norris for the lead.
The gap is down to 2.5 seconds with traffic getting in the way but that is bringing Piastri into play once again.
Who will win the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix?
Lap 55/70: Colapinto almost takes Piastri out!
Both McLarens pit and take the medium tyres to go to the end of the race with Oscar Piastri charged with hunting down Lando Norris until the end…
But he’s almost out of the race as Franco Colapinto’s Alpine, running second-last, forces him onto the grass whilst racing Yuki Tsunoda!
Amateur hour from the Argentinian, who is now under investigation and will probably collect a penalty for interfering with the leaders.
Norris’ gap is now three seconds.
Lap 51/70: Hamilton pits… But he’s not happy about it
Lewis Hamilton comes into the pits one lap later than Charles Leclerc be he’s not happy at all as he argues with his race engineer.
The seven-time world champion doesn’t want to stop and feels as though his tyres are fine, but Ricardo Adami tells him to pit anyway.
He follows suit and is now in fourth, likely where he will finish this race – although he has just set the fastest lap.
Lap 50/70: Charles Leclerc pits from third
Charles Leclerc takes a set of medium tyres as he gets a 2.4-second stop from third at the Red Bull ring to go to the end of the race, emerging on track in fourth.
Lewis Hamilton will be due in shortly and Gabriel Bortoleto also pits, getting a 2.2-second stop as he comes back out into 10th.
Sauber could be on for good points!
Lap 48/70: Mistakes for Piastri and Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri both make a couple of mistakes on their laps as the Ferrari catches oversteer at Turn 4 and runs wide, now 8.8 seconds behind Charles Leclerc in fourth.
Meanwhile Piastri, in his quest to catch Lando Norris for the lead and to extend his championship gap, is now 4.3 seconds behind with that trip over the sausage kerbs at Turn 1.
Will he be able to recover?
Lap 47/70: Russell stops again
That’s Mercedes and George Russell committed to a two-stop strategy as the Brit comes in for a second set of hard tyres and picks off Isack Hadjar on his out-lap.
Russell is now back up to ninth and has a four-second margin to make up if he wants to catch Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin ahead.
He’s racing for fifth-place at best.
Lap 43/70: Gap to 3.5 between Norris/Piastri
Oscar Piastri is making his way through slower cars as he passes Lance Stroll into Turn 3, this could cost him time to Lando Norris as he aims to catch the McLaren ahead.
Norris’ instruction is clear: Do not let Oscar into your DRS.
But will he be able to do it? Piastri still has to pass Nico Hulkenberg’s Sauber at the moment.
Lap 40/70: Oscar Piastri reining in Lando Norris
The gap to Lando Norris is now down to 3.3 seconds as Oscar Piastri closes up to his rival ahead, with the pair poised to do battle again.
Will we get some extra drama at the 2025 Austrian GP? The Aussie behind has a four-lap tyre advantage on what is expected to be a two-stopper.
Will McLaren pit the leader to avoid them going wheel-to-wheel? Piastri has been banned from making any kind of 50/50 moves.
Lap 38/70: Ferrari cars poised for battle?
Charles Leclerc leads Lewis Hamilton by 3.6 seconds at the Austrian GP and they are contending for the final podium spot, and potentially even a win if Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri hit each other at some stage.
Both are on the same tyres with the same equipment, could they be fighting for the podium to the line on what could be a two-stop strategy?
They are in lift-and-coast mode but George Russell is not a threat and is almost an entire pit-stop behind the two Ferrari cars.
Lap 35/70: Your order at half distance
Lando Norris continues to lead Oscar Piastri at the Red Bull Ring, the gap between the McLaren duo at 5.5 seconds.
Charles Leclerc is third but is almost 14 seconds off the lead and no longer a factor in this race, and he’s got Lewis Hamilton 3.6 seconds behind.
Then comes George Russell, Gabriel Bortoleto, Nico Hulkenberg, Esteban Ocon, Oliver Bearman and Pierre Gasly rounding out the Top 10 in Austria.
Lap 33/70: Piastri slowly chipping away at Norris
Oscar Piastri has brought the gap to Lando Norris down from 6.5 seconds to 5.8 seconds, but that won’t be enough to catch his McLaren colleague as things stand.
Can he find a bit more time before the pair pit for their second stops? They had a thrilling battle in the opening stint and the gathered crowd will be keen to see more of that.
Yuki Tsunoda’s 10-second time penalty is now confirmed too.
Lap 31/70: Tsunoda hits Colapinto!
Yuki Tsunoda in the Red Bull hits Franco Colapinto’s Alpine with a late move to the inside at Turn 4 and spins the Argentinian rookie around!
The 25-year-old comes into the pits at the end of the lap as Christian Horner’s mechanics check his front-wing and he will now be running firmly last in the order.
Expect a 10-second time penalty for that – once again, holding the outside line at Turn 4 simply does not work.
Lap 29/70: Nice move from Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton swoops around the outside of Liam Lawson into Turn 6 and takes fourth place back from the Racing Bulls driver.
It wasn’t a particularly hard overtake considering the pace disparity and tyre difference but it did demand precision and compliance from both racers.
Good stuff.
Lap 25 and 26/70: Both Ferrari cars pit
Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton both pit from the lead on consecutive laps as they aim to keep tabs on the McLaren cars ahead in case any drama happens.
They both have a healthy gap over George Russell’s Mercedes and they can focus on their own races now.
It’s likely to be a two-stopper, and both cars are running the hard tyres. Norris is back into the lead with Piastri just behind.
Lap 24/70: Piastri pits from lead
Oscar Piastri now comes into the pits from the lead for McLaren as he looks to chase down Lando Norris but he also gets a slower stop!
His car is serviced in 3.4 seconds as they take the hard tyres and now he needs to make up 6.5 seconds to catch his colleague and title rival.
Charles Leclerc now leads.
Lap 23/70: Piastri not making much headway so far
Oscar Piastri wants a tyre delta over Lando Norris and his pace won’t be good enough to overcut as things stand.
So far, he isn’t making too much progress over his McLaren rival but he should be quicker on a newer set of tyres.
How much faster? That remains to be seen.
Lap 20/70: Norris pits to dodge Piastri!
Oscar Piastri has a go at Lando Norris into Turn 4 but locks up big time and thankfully manages to avoid whacking his McLaren teammate.
Norris comes into the pits at the end of that lap and it’s a slightly slow stop at 3.1 as he takes the hard tyres, could that hand Piastri the lead?
Out-lap critical for the Brit… But Piastri is going longer!
Lap 19/70: George Russell pits
George Russell comes into his pit box and gets a 2.4-second stop, heading back out onto the circuit in 11th place.
He’s trying to pull the undercut on Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari in their battle for fourth place at the Red Bull ring.
Let’s see how it goes as Yuki Tsunoda also pits for Red Bull, and comes back out in 16th and last of the running cars.
Lap 17/70: Alex Albon OUT for Williams
It’s a double DNF for Williams and their bid for points at this 2025 Austrian GP comes to an end as Alex Albon comes into the garage and bows out.
Carlos Sainz retired on the formation lap when his brakes failed. Not a good afternoon for James Vowles and his team.
Lap 15/70: Oscar Piastri has another go at Lando Norris!
Oscar Piastri is really close through Turn 1 and 3 but this time patiently waits for the DRS to target a move at Turn 4.
However Lando Norris has just enough top speed to keep him at arm’s length. The pair are very close.
Great stuff from our championship protagonists, but McLaren will be very, very nervous.
Lap 13/70: Piastri dropping back ever so slightly
Oscar Piastri dropped out of DRS range of Norris through Lap 12 but managed to get back within the limit for the extra straight-line speed boost.
He’s not managed to mount a challenge since that go on Lap 11 but he is definitely close and is definitely pushing.
This could bring Charles Leclerc into contention for the win if it all goes awry for McLaren at the Red Bull Ring.
Lap 11/70: Norris and Piastri go wheel-to-wheel!
Lando Norris makes a mistake at Turn 1 and runs slightly wider, letting Oscar Piastri go for a lunge into Turn 3 but Norris sees it coming and hits him with the switchback!
That lets the Brit claim the inside line into Turn 4 and he just about manages to keep the lead for another lap but there are zero punches being pulled between the pair.
This is epic!
Lap 9/70: McLaren pair already checking out
Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have already pulled a 3.3-second gap to the field behind, although they are pushing and there’s little doubt that Charles Leclerc is managing in the Ferrari.
What kind of gap can they open up before the pit-stop phase? Will that gap disappear if there are any fireworks into Turn 3 and 4?
Norris leads Piastri by under one second.
Lap 6/70: Piastri has a go at Norris!
Lando Norris is vulnerable to Oscar Piastri and the Australian has a look with a lunge at Turn 4, but wisely thinks better of it and backs out.
The championship leader is making sure the leader and his teammate knows exactly where he is in those wing mirrors.
McLaren say they are free to race 👀
Lap 5/70: Piastri in DRS of Norris
Oscar Piastri, the championship leader, is within DRS range of his McLaren teammate, but so far can’t make the move stick.
Lando Norris, the leader and pole sitter, is currently doing just enough to fend off his rival.
How long can he keep it up for?
Lap 4/70: Racing resumes at Red Bull Ring
Lando Norris leads the cars away once again as the green flags are waved following that Lap 1 crash with Max Verstappen and Kimi Antonelli.
LEADER: Norris. Then comes Piastri, Leclerc, Hamilton, Russell, Gasly, Albon, Bortoleto, Lawson and Alonso in the Top 10.
Lap 3/70: Antonelli completely to blame
Kimi Antonelli makes his first big rookie mistake of the season by being caught out with how early the grid brakes at Turn 3, forcing him to lock his rears.
That sets him on a collision course with Max Verstappen, who is far from impressed.
The safety car is ENDING this lap.
LIGHTS OUT: Antonelli hits Verstappen!
Lando Norris immediately covers off Charles Leclerc and that lets Oscar Piastri around the outside into second palace, not what the lead McLaren would have wanted.
But it’s Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen who tangle at Turn 3 when the 18-year-old Mercedes driver locks up and slams into the side of the Red Bull!
They are both OUT of this 2025 Austrian Grand Prix as the safety car is deployed!
Second formation lap begins in Austria
The second formation lap now begins in Austria after the procedures have been correctly followed after Carlos Sainz’s DNF for brakes and gearbox issues.
That’s a spanner in the works to Lando Norris, will he be able to handle the lights out or is he feeling a little unsettled?
The race will only be 70 laps long now.
What tyres are the front runners on?
It’s expected to be a two-stopper in Austria with the searing heat of the European sun baking this tarmac to scorching hot temperatures.
In light of that, almost all of the front runners have picked the C4 medium tyre to begin the race on from Pirelli.
You have to go all the way down to Pierre Gasly’s Alpine in 10th to find the first soft tyre runner.
Joining Gasly on that rubber are Isack Hadjar (13th), Franco Colapinto (14th), Oliver Bearman (15th) and Nico Hulkenberg (20th).
It seems to be a gamble to use the red-walled soft based on those picks.

Carlos Sainz OUT of the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix
Carlos Sainz does get going again and he comes into the pit-lane to park up for the start, but his brakes are on fire and the mechanics rush over to him to try to keep his Williams under control.
That is the Spaniard out of this race before it even begins if he has a brakes issue. The start was also aborted because his FW47 couldn’t get out of first gear.
The race will restart at 15:15 local time in Austria (CET).
FORMATION LAP ABORTED
The formation lap is underway but Carlos Sainz is stuck on the grid with his Williams unable to get out of first gear!
The start is aborted and this race will be shorted by one lap, meaning there are 70 tours of Austria.
Lando Norris will lead the cars away on a second formation lap shortly.
Your starting grid for the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix
It’s Lando Norris on pole for McLaren but how do they line up down the rest of the field?
Find out where his championship rivals, Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen, are starting from.
And if anyone is on for some shock points too…
How does Lando Norris feel ahead of lights out?
Lando Norris now has the chance to breathe life back into his championship ambitions but he must first ensure he survives the opening few laps with Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri close behind.
Piastri, starting directly behind his McLaren rival, will want to immediately make amends for qualifying, whilst Leclerc in the Ferrari will have the inside line and getting past Norris could be key to him holding off his own teammate, Lewis Hamilton, in the hunt for the podium.
So how does Lando feel as lights out approaches?
“We’ve got a great car,” Norris told F1 TV. “So it’s just a good start and then try to control things from there.
“I expect a good battle from them both [Leclerc and Piastri]. I expect them especially on the first couple of laps to be punchy, but that’s racing. I just need to make sure I put up a good defence and go from there.”
Check out Lando Norris’ magnificent lap
Lando Norris roared to pole position at the Red Bull Ring by becoming the only driver to set a lap time in the 1:03s, with a blistering margin to Charles Leclerc behind.
Can he now convert that into his third win of the season?

Great news for fans of this Austrian GP race!
The Austrian GP will remain a staple piece of the Formula 1 calendar until at least 2041 after agreeing a new deal with the sport.
Cars will return to the Red Bull Ring for the next 15 years, with the chance of many more memorable classics to be made.
Max Verstappen, his team and the Orange Army will be delighted about this news.
Can Max Verstappen fight back before his fans?
Max Verstappen is starting this race from a lowly seventh on the grid after his final qualifying lap was interrupted… So can he fight back in Austria?
He’s got a prior history of doing that here if fans think back to the 2019 edition of the race when anti-stall at the start dropped him down the order, before he claimed the lead away from Charles Leclerc with laps running out!
How does the world champion feel about his prospects?
Welcome to the blog!
It’s Lando Norris on pole position for McLaren after a stellar effort in Saturday’s qualifying but can he convert and get his championship charge back on track by winning the 2025 Austrian GP?
The challenge will no doubt come from Oscar Piastri, starting from third, whilst both of Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton will be hopeful they can land a podium finish.
