F1 2025 Austrian GP Starting Grid

McLaren’s Norris dominates as qualifying chaos sets up an unpredictable race at the Red Bull Ring

-

The 2025 Austrian GP Starting Grid has been set in dramatic fashion, with Lando Norris claiming a commanding pole position at the Red Bull Ring for McLaren. The British driver’s lap of 1:03.971 put him more than half a second clear of the competition, the largest pole gap seen so far this season.

Splitting the McLarens at the front, Charles Leclerc delivered an impressive lap for Ferrari to secure second place, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton will start fourth, lining up alongside Piastri on the second row. George Russell put his Mercedes into fifth, with rookie Liam Lawson grabbing a surprise sixth for Racing Bulls.

Further back, Gabriel Bortoleto continued his standout rookie campaign by qualifying eighth for Sauber. The top ten was rounded out by Andrea Kimi Antonelli for Mercedes and Gasly’s Alpine.

Qualifying Drama and Big Names Knocked Out

The Qualifying session was punctuated by a red flag in Q2 after a grass fire at the final corner, triggered when Hamilton ran wide. This interruption left drivers with a frantic dash to set competitive laps, leading to several notable eliminations.

Fernando Alonso (Aston Martin), Alex Albon (Williams), Isack Hadjar (Racing Bulls), Franco Colapinto (Alpine), and Ollie Bearman (Haas) all missed out on Q3 and will start outside the top ten.

Yuki Tsunoda endured another tough qualifying session for Red Bull, failing to make it out of Q1 at the team’s home event. He starts 18th, with the back row filled by Carlos Sainz (Williams) and Nico Hulkenberg (Sauber).

With several front-running drivers out of position and others capitalising on the chaos, the stage is set for an unpredictable 2025 Austrian Grand Prix on Sunday.
