‘We’ve got our gameplan’ – Are Williams changing Chinese GP approach after crashes?

Williams have suffered a string of heavy crashes in 2024 ahead of the Chinese GP

Alex Albon insisted Williams would still be going into the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix weekend with full aggression despite the team suffering costly crashes in Melbourne and Suzuka including Logan Sargeant missing the race in Australia due to damage.

Albon replaced Sargeant after the British-Thai driver’s heavy shunt in FP1 with Williams only bringing two chassis to Australia and electing to allow their lead driver to continue the weekend.

Then Sargeant broke his front wing in Japan in free practice and Albon‘s race ended on the first lap after a collision with Ricciardo, meaning more pain for the team with one of the smallest budgets on the Formula 1 grid.

However, Albon was resolute when asked whether the team would modify its approach for the Chinese GP sprint weekend.

“You go about your racing not really thinking about it,” Albon told members of the press including Total-Motorsport.com. “If I’m totally honest, obviously it there but the moment that you start to think about the lack of parts or the lack of whatever, you might as well stay home.

“You’ve got to attack the weekend like you do in any other weekend, you can’t treat it any differently, you’ve got to be on the limit, to feel what the limit is and get a balance for the cars.

“It’s one of them ones where you do have to kind of half-block your brain and just go about racing as normal. So you have to still treat the weekends the same.”

Sargeant: You stay committed to the plan

Sargeant was desperately disappointed to miss out in Australia through no fault of his own, after Williams chose to give his chassis to Albon for the remainder of the weekend.

However, he failed to bounce back in Suzuka as the sole surviving Williams due to a combination of driver error and an uncompetitive FW46.

“I think once you’re in the car and helmets on and you know you’re ready to go, you don’t think about those things you just you got you you drive your best and try to perform,” Sargeant added.

“That’s really the thought process of a driver and I think sometimes you have to try and calculate the risk a little bit, you know, considering the situation. I think that’s something I could have done better in FP1 in Japan.

“But other than that, I think you just have to keep looking forward and keep staying committed to the plan.”
