What is the new F1 Sprint format in 2024?

Formula 1's Sprint format has undergone changes for 2024 which could have a big effect on the race weekend

Formula 1‘s Sprints are back for 2024 and this year will see six events hold the alternative format, where extra points are on offer on the Saturday of an F1 Grand Prix weekend.

Beginning in 2021, the Sprint weekend format has undergone several changes and this year is no different.

Whilst one practice session to kick off the track action and the Grand Prix on Sunday remains, everything else has changed since 2023.

F1 Sprint format in 2024

New for 2024 is the Sprint Qualifying, previously known as the Sprint Shootout, will now be on Friday afternoon after the only practice session. Prior to this year, normal qualifying for Sunday’s race took place on Friday.

This means the Sprint race, which is one-third distance of the Grand Prix, will be the first track session on Saturday before the usual qualifying takes place in its normal Saturday afternoon slot.

Parc ferme regulations will start ahead of Sprint Qualifying on Friday but will be released again after the Sprint, so the teams can make changes for normal qualifying.

  • Friday: Free Practice 1 and Sprint Qualifying
  • Saturday: Sprint and Grand Prix Qualifying
  • Sunday: Grand Prix

How does Sprint Qualifying work?

There are no changes here but as a reminder, Sprint Qualifying sees shorter segments compared to normal qualifying and different tyre rules.

SQ1 will be 12 minutes long, with SQ2 just 10 minutes long. Both segments will see the bottom five drivers eliminated and only medium tyres can be used. SQ3 will dictate the top 10 grid for the Sprint, with only soft tyres allowed.

How does the Sprint work?

The Sprint is around 100km, so will last approximately half an hour. There is a free starting tyre choice but no mandatory pit stop.

Points are awarded to the top eight finishers: 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 but no extra point is awarded for the fastest lap.

Which Grand Prix will have Sprints in 2024?

Six events will host Sprint weekends this year with the Chinese Grand Prix hosting the first one on April 19-21. Two weeks later, Miami will host the second Sprint in early May.

As has become a recent tradition, Austria‘s Red Bull Ring will feature the Sprint weekend at the end of June.

The United States GP at the Circuit of the Americas in October, the Sao Paulo GP and Qatar GP in November will host the remaining Sprints in F1 this year.
