Inside Toto Wolff’s latest attempt to win over Max Verstappen

The Mercedes team principal remains determined to convince Verstappen to leave Red Bull for Mercedes

Even as Max Verstappen looks set to remain at Red Bull for the foreseeable future, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has not yet tired in his efforts to draw Verstappen over to the Brackley-based team.

Wolff made known his interest in Verstappen after rumours surfaced that the defending world champion could leave Red Bull in light of the allegations of misconduct made against team principal Christian Horner, which have been dismissed.

As Wolff seeks to make Mercedes an ever-more inviting destination for Verstappen, the Austrian has begun to approach key personnel from Red Bull.

According to F1-Insider, Wolff’s latest target is Pierre Wache: Red Bull’s technical director and Adrian Newey’s ‘right-hand man’. Alongside Wache, Wolff has openly stated that Helmut Marko – whom Verstappen is apparently contractually tied to – would also be welcome at Mercedes

Schumacher-esque ambassadorship

So eager is Mercedes for Verstappen to join its ranks, the team is apparently offering Verstappen a lucrative ambassadorial role within the company — not unlike the position Michael Schumacher held with Mercedes.

It’s not just Wolff and Mercedes‘ board member that would like Verstappen to join the German team. According to F1-Insider, over 90 percent of personnel at Mercedes would support the Dutchman joining the team.
