F1 2024 Miami GP – Fastest Lap

McLaren enjoyed a day to remember in Miami as Lando Norris took his first race victory, but the Briton was denied the fastest lap

It was a day to remember for McLaren in the Florida heat as Lando Norris secured his first Formula 1 victory at the 2024 Miami Grand Prix, with his team-mate Oscar Piastri also taking the fastest lap.

Norris had gone 109 race starts without claiming a race win, after finishing 15 times on the podium in his career with McLaren.

But the 24-year-old, with a calculated gamble on waiting for a safety car, managed to pass Max Verstappen and finished some seven seconds ahead of the Red Bull star.

His team-mate Piastri ensured it wouldn’t be a case of taking home maximum points for Norris, however, after posting the fastest lap time at the Miami International Autodrome circuit.

The youngster, on a fresh set of medium tyres, showed what could have been with some quick laps towards the end of the race and posted his quickest time with a 1:30.346 on Lap 51.

However, he will be leaving the United States with a feeling of frustration rather than jubilation.

Piastri denied a point

The Australian was not able to score a world single championship point after spending several laps engaged in a thrilling battle with Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz. Their feisty battle came to a head on Lap 40, when the two cars touched, and Piastri sustained damage to his front wing.

He was therefore forced to pit to fit a new front wing and fell down to plumb last, before making his way through the grid to come home in 13th.

Unfortunately for the 23-year-old, F1 regulations state that only drivers that finish in the top 10 receive an additional point for the fastest lap.

Towards the end of the race, concerned McLaren engineers told Piastri on the radio to be careful when overtaking after another absorbing battle with Daniel Ricciardo.

But he showed his careful race craft to get past the RB driver without risking a safety car, which could have impacted Norris at the front, and McLaren will be delighted with their drivers’ performances in Miami, even if it was Norris‘ day to shine.
