Have McLaren gone backwards or forwards? Lando Norris gives his verdict

Lando Norris believes positives can be taken from the British team's start to the 2024 Formula 1 season.

Lando Norris is largely positive about McLaren‘s start to the 2024 Formula 1 season after he secured his first podium this year at the Australian Grand Prix.

McLaren were regularly Red Bull‘s closest challengers in the second half of 2023 but have been overtaken by Ferrari in the development race over the winter.

Following the opening three rounds of the 2024 season, McLaren sit third in the constructor standings but are ahead of Mercedes and Aston Martin.

“The gap to Red Bull is completely expected,” Norris told reporters. “For us to be as close as we are to them, I think is a good sign.

“You’ll probably see the most impressive has been Ferrari in how they’ve been able to take a very big step, I would say probably one of the biggest steps from last year to this year. But for us to still be not far behind, i think it’s still a completely good sign for us.”

McLaren looking for more

Norris is sixth in the drivers’ championship, ahead of George Russell and Fernando Alonso. However, Norris is behind teammate Oscar Piastri, who sits fifth in the standings.

In Norris’ opinion, there’s still work for McLaren to do, as it continues to grapple with the areas that troubles the team most, the slow-speed corners.

“We weren’t able to maybe tackle a few of those things that we have struggled to tackle in the last few years,” said Norris. “But now more than ever, we’re trying to tackle those areas.

“On the whole, I’m very happy. Could I be happier? Yes, can’t we all? We always want more, we always want to be able to compete a bit higher.

“But I think for us to start the season in such a solid position, knowing that we can still improve on so many areas, puts a smile on my face, because we’re in a good position, and we know we can get a lot better.”
