Why Max Verstappen doesn’t want to drive for Ferrari in F1

Max Verstappen gave his first reaction to Lewis Hamilton's move from Mercedes to Ferrari for 2025

Max Verstappen doesn’t feel the draw of Ferrari in Formula 1 and insists he’s happy staying at Red Bull as the team unveiled the RB20 to follow up their all-conquering 2023 season.

Christian Horner and Sergio Perez both expressed surprise at Hamilton‘s move from Mercedes to Ferrari for 2025 but Verstappen said he understood the decision, and wished his former title rival well when he does make his debut with the team.

However, when asked whether he’d consider a similar change later in his career, Verstappen was less sure.

“I don’t know. Like, I don’t want to sound like disrespectful or whatever. I have a lot of respect for the brand Ferrari. But I’m very happy where I’m at the moment,” Verstappen told journalists including Total-Motorsport.com.

“So I’m comfortable in the environment that I’m in, for me it’s not something that I’m looking for to change or whatever. For me now it’s not even in my in my head, it’s only F1. And I want to do more things than F1 as well, also from the virtual side of things that I’m working on.

“There are a lot of things going on in the background for me also what I want to do in the future. But again, I also know in my life from what I’ve experienced so far, never say never with things.”

Sebastian Vettel was the last driver to jump from Red Bull to Ferrari at the start of 2015 after winning four championships in seven years at the Milton Keynes-based team, but had a much bigger draw in the form of his idol Michael Schumacher, whom he watched win five consecutive drivers’ titles in red.

Hamilton also completes a step his hero Ayrton Senna never made, but was reportedly set to achieve – he’d allegedly been offered a contract by then-Ferrari boss Jean Todt for the 1995 season, shortly before the Brazilian was killed at Imola.

By contrast, Verstappen wasn’t alive in 1994 and hadn’t long turned seven when Michael Schumacher won his final world championship with the Scuderia. He was just 11 years old when they won their last title – the constructors’ crown in 2008 – so never really witnessed the dominance of the generation of drivers before him.

“At the end of the day, if someone wants to drive a Ferrari and especially someone like Lewis when you’ve achieved so much, that’s his dream and goal,” Verstappen added.

“And we don’t know the talks that they had at Mercedes and Ferrari, what they think is coming so you can’t give an honest assessment from our side, why you make that decision.

“But if he’s happy with that move then he should go, I think it will look cool and of course, I hope for them that it’s going to be success.”
