Bahrain GP 2024 FP2 – Updates and news

CHEQUERED FLAG: Hamilton leads a Mercedes 1-2 with Verstappen down in 6th

Heading into the F1 season, I don’t think anybody quite expected this result from FP2. Mercedes have a 1-2 and Red Bull are 6th and 10th as they consistently lap half a second slower than Lewis Hamilton.

Every time they attempted to improve their times, they remained a long way distant of the Mercedes car and they were not even second fastest with Aston Martin, Ferrari and McLaren all ahead of them too.

What does this mean for qualifying? Perhaps they have different engine modes or perhaps they are prioritizing qualifying and the race in opposing orders, but one thing is for sure, it tees up a lot excitement for the rest of the weekend.

Total-Motorsport.com will bring you live coverage of qualifying which gets underway at 19:00 local time on Friday, March 1.

To the flag: Teams are doing long runs

The fast laps for the day seem to have run their course and so teams are focusing on long runs and opening lap stints on the soft tyre, particularly Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, as teams look to give themselves the best strategic options.

10 minutes to go: Red Bull are STILL half a second off the pace

And this isn’t as though it’s just Sergio Perez either, Max Verstappen is struggling to find any speed at all and sits half a second off Lewis Hamilton still.

Do Mercedes have the engine turned up or is their pace for real?

Is there a title fight in 2024?

Sky Sports F1’s Karun Chandhok: “I’m conflicted here. I want to get excited about the fact that we’ve got Mercedes one-two, Ferrari third, McLaren fourth, Red Bull and Verstappen only fifth.

“I want to get excited that we’ve got an open championship battle here, but everyone in that paddock has spent all day yesterday and all morning today telling me that Red Bull are going to blitz it, so I don’t know what to feel right now, but it’s exciting!”

Do you think there will be a title fight in 2024? Will we get a repeat of 2021 or will these modern regulations truly come into their own with a 2012-esque season?

Timing update: Mercedes 1-2! Verstappen 5th

Max Verstappen and Red Bull aren’t having a good day at the office as they’re consistently half a second down on Lewis Hamilton’s chart-topping Mercedes.

George Russell has moved up into second, 0.206 down on his departing teammate with Sainz in third, Piastri in 4th, then Verstappen, Hulkenberg, Stroll, Alonso, Leclerc and Perez rounding off the top 10 with under half an hour to go.

Haas look strong over one lap

It’s obviously early doors, but Haas are looking good in qualifying trim as Nico Hulkenberg pops the American team up into fourth whilst Magnussen sits in 12th.

Of course, that wasn’t their problem in 2023 and it likely won’t be in 2024 either, they need to focus on race runs.

Analysis: 24 Sunday races in 2024, is it too much?

There will also be six Sprint Races to go with them, how will the drivers and mechanics cope?

Verstappen’s lap is very underwhelming

Running a set of soft tyres, the Dutchman sets a lap and it’s half a second slower than what Lewis Hamilton proved to be capable of and is good enough for fourth-best.

Red Bull fans, hope that he has some extra fuel in the car otherwise look away now…

The last corner is a problem for the drivers

Kevin Magnussen, Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are all seen losing the rear of their cars for various reasons at the last corner, could that be a track limits issue for Saturday qualifying?

Getting a good launch out of the corner is crucial as it leads onto the long straight, a bad expect can be a very bitter loss of lap time.

Valtteri Bottas is under investigation

Bottas appears to have performed his practice start in the wrong location but considering it is practice and the first race of the year, surely they will let him off…

Hello Mercedes… Hamilton goes almost a second quicker than Leclerc

Lewis Hamilton complained about the driveability of the rear in 2023 and Mercedes listened to him by making the important changes he wanted and he is instantly rewarding them as he goes fastest overall with a 1:30.751 to go 0.827 faster than Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari.

GREEN FLAG: FP2 begins!

The first car out on track is the lime-green and black Sauber of Zhou Guanyu. He won’t expect to top the session today but it’s nice to see his name at the top of the timing chart, albeit briefly.

Recap: Ricciardo topped FP1

In the newly-branded RB car, Daniel Ricciardo topped FP1 ahead of Lando Norris, Oscar Piastri and Yuki Tsunoda whilst the big teams didn’t set any laps on soft tyres so their true pace remains to be seen.

Max Verstappen wasn’t happy with the set-up of his car and complained about the downshifts at great length, have Red Bull sorted it out for FP2?

ICYMI: Toto Wolff reacts to Christian Horner being cleared

The Red Bull boss was under investigation for controlling and coercive behaviour and Wolff has added his thoughts to the matter.

Analysis: What is good about FP2?

As we wait for the second, and final, practice session of Friday to take place many will be asking what exactly is it useful for? With an extra session to go on Saturday, wouldn’t that be the most important one?

Well, FP2 actually has the most representative conditions for qualifying and the race as it takes place at the night which means the teams can get the best information on how the brakes and tyres are heating up, how they’re handling degradation and how much cooling they need/can get away with.

So it’s incredibly important and allows for the drivers and teams to get their best projections for how the race will play out and where they will be, meaning that it is critical for planning race strategies.
