Lewis Hamilton opens up on Mercedes pain: I’ve had enough of this

The Briton will join Ferrari in 2025, ending his 12-year spell with the Mercedes team where he enjoyed unrivalled success.

Lewis Hamilton has revealed his burning desire to win a record-breaking eighth Formula 1 drivers’ title convinced him to leave Mercedes for Ferrari.

The seven-time world champion will join the Scuderia in time for the 2025 season in a deal that will make him the highest-paid driver in F1 history. Hamilton exercised a break clause in his contract, leaving Mercedes boss Toto Wolff shocked when he announced his departure in February.

It comes at a time where Hamilton has never looked further from adding to his 103 race wins with Mercedes. Back in 2021, he was locked in a thrilling fight for drivers’ championship with Max Verstappen, before a controversial last lap in Abu Dhabi cost him the chance to win an unprecedented eighth drivers’ title.

Since then, Verstappen has gone on to dominate with 39 race wins, while Mercedes are nowhere near the front. And Hamilton admits he is fed up of racing with no hope of success.

“For me, this whole journey has been massively emotional, just because I have so much love for this team. I’m not leaving because i’m unhappy there, I’m not leaving because of relationship issues,” Hamilton said in an interview with CBS before the 2024 Miami Grand Prix.

“It’s been tough of course, we exist to win. When you’re not winning, your perspective has to shift. It’s about thinking, how we can make improvements? How can we get back to where we want to be? I actually really enjoyed that experience. But three years in… it’s like ‘OK, I’ve had enough of this. Let’s get back to where we belong’.”

Hamilton opens up on low moments

Hamilton is yet to finish in the top-five this season due to Mercedes’ difficulties with their W15 car. The 39-year-old has sacrificed some results to find the ideal car setup, before announcing Mercedes had abandoned their ‘experiment’ after the Chinese GP.

The Miami GP brought about his best result of the season as he finished in sixth place in Florida, providing some much-needed relief for the Brackley team as Hamilton lifted the lid on a difficult period within the team.

“That’s probably the most painful part right now. I think everyone in the team wants it to be a great year. Everyone has worked so hard back at the factory, no less than the year before,” Hamilton said before adding: “It could’ve been worse, but it’s been a real transitional experience.

“There’s been a lot of team bonding, there’s been a lot of real low moments, which obviously brings us together. There’s been a lot of vulnerability. It’s really been a growing experience for us.”
