Lewis Hamilton insists he’s always loved working at Mercedes ahead of final season

Mercedes have won just one race in the last two years and averaging 14 per season from 2014-21

Lewis Hamilton stressed he’s focused on the upcoming season with Mercedes, his final year at the team before leaving for Ferrari, and is optimistic for the year having seen Mercedes‘ 2024 challenger revealed at their car launch.

2024 will be the last of Hamilton‘s 12-year stint at Brackley and news of his move came as a shock to all at Mercedes, including Toto Wolff, who reportedly found out just a day before it was announced publicly.

Mercedes have completely revised their 2024 car after admitting their initial concept for the new regulations had failed, and they’re hoping to improve on their first winless season since 2011.

“I’ve always loved working with the team,” Hamilton said ahead of stepping in the W15 E Performance for the first time. “I think particularly when there’s so many people, it’s such a huge team that’s in the background.

“It’s all about high performance, this machine that we are building and that carries us across the line. Without all of those people in the background working so incredibly hard as they do, we will not ever get to where we need to be.

“So it’s great when we all have a common common goal. And we’re all focused on that the whole year, so it’s a real privilege.”

Hamilton: 2022 and 2023 have grounded us.

Mercedes were only denied a clean sweep of drivers’ and constructors’ championships from 2014 to 2021 by Michael Masi‘s ‘human error’ at the end of the controversial 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix handing Max Verstappen the title, but have endured a torrid time since then.

They averaged 14 wins per season in that era but George Russell‘s 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix win remains their only victory since the regulations change, and even that wasn’t wholly positive as it helped convince the team to keep their ‘no sidepods’ concept for 2023.

But since announcing that failure before the season-opening 2023 Bahrain GP had even begun, Hamilton, Russell and Wolff believe they’re finally on the right track.

“The focus through the whole winter training is first getting the team back to where we once were,” Hamilton added.

“I think we’ve had this difficult couple of years which has been really grounding for us. It’s helped us to regroup, re-look at things and it’s now just going through the important process, being really diligent with our work, understanding that data and understanding the car.”
