Is Kevin Magnussen willing to risk F1 race ban at Emilia Romagna GP?

The Haas driver could be banned for the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix if he receives any more penalty points in Imola

Kevin Magnussen has admitted he may risk being hit with a race ban at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix if it means helping Haas score more points in the Formula 1 2024 constructors’ championship.

The Dane has come under fire for his recent performances on track after clocking up an unprecedented total of 55 seconds worth of penalties during the Miami GP race weekend with six different infractions.

The 32-year-old ran Lewis Hamilton off the track in the F1 Sprint and crashed into Logan Sargeant, ending the Williams driver’s race. It is not the first time he has been in trouble after colliding with Alex Albon in Abu Dhabi in 2023.

After racking up 10 penalty points for his actions in Miami, Magnussen is now just two away from exceeding the limit of 12, which means he will be banned from the Monaco GP if he picks up a penalty in Imola.

But Magnussen hinted he is prepared to receive his punishment from the FIA if it means helping his team-mate Nico Hulkenberg finish in the top 10.

“I think the next time is a race ban, so I’ll have to [be more conservative],” Magnussen said in the drivers’ press conference at Imola. “I don’t know. These situations where I have to play a support role for my team mate, they have been paying off, it’s been valuable to us.”

Magnussen asks FIA to consider changes

It comes after reports suggested the FIA are considering handing out harsher penalties in response to Magnussen’s tactical driving, which may not go down well with the 20 drivers on the grid.

Daniel Ricciardo, who was sat alongside Magnussen in the press conference, offered his support to his colleague by adding that no driver should be excluded from racing and the other drivers “wouldn’t want that”.

And Magnussen also suggested the FIA should examine the rules regarding penalty points, conceding he “doesn’t love” their view on penalising drivers.

“I don’t love the way the rules are, I would love that it’s not possible at all [to be banned],” Magnussen added. “But the rules are as they are, I didn’t make the rules and there’s stuff to be looked at there. For myself, I’m on 10 points so I have to be careful not to get a race ban.”

When asked if Haas will be able to continue their impressive form in 2024 to add to their six championship points, he replied: “There is a few low-speed, but also a lot of medium speed corners, so I don’t know. Our car has been reasonably good on most tracks this year and I expect it to be decent here also.”
