F1 2024 Emilia Romagna GP: Fastest Lap

Find out who set the fastest lap during the Emilia Romagna GP and claim the extra world championship point

George Russell claimed the fastest lap at the 2024 Formula 1 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix to take home another point on an improved weekend for Mercedes at Imola.

The Briton knuckled down to almost put in a qualifying lap and set the fastest lap of the race on Lap 55, despite Toto Wolff saying he would be happy for his drivers to be slower.

His lap time – a 1:18.589 – was some three seconds slower than the quickest lap in qualifying set by Max Verstappen.

After starting sixth on the grid, Russell came home in seventh position to add six points to his total of 37 in the drivers’ world championship, taking his tally to 43 after seven races. With the extra point for the fastest lap included as he finished inside the top 10, he is now on 44 points.

In truth, Mercedes were not the quickest car on track by any means, and the opportunity only presented itself after Russell came into the pits for a second stop of the afternoon, as Mercedes tried to steal the fastest lap from Red Bull driver Sergio Perez.

Clever strategy from Mercedes

The Mexican was over 30 seconds behind Russell and that gave him the chance to fit brand new tyres for his W15 for the remaining 11 laps of the race, having pitted on Lap 53. That meant sacrificing sixth position for his team-mate Lewis Hamilton to go ahead.

The pressure was on the Mercedes driver to get his head down and hook up a quick lap on the second lap after coming out of the pits.

The fastest lap means that Russell is able to add an extra point to his tally from the weekend Imola, and he now has 44 in the championship. What’s more, he takes a point away from Red Bull – effectively creating a two-point swing in the constructors’ for Mercedes.

It represents a positive end to the weekend for Mercedes, who have struggled for pace this season and are still way off matching the Red Bull, Ferrari and McLarens at the front. But the fastest lap shows the Silver Arrows are still able to make their mark in a grand prix weekend.
