F1 2024 British GP: Driver of the Day

The British GP offered its usual dose of high drama and changeable weather, with a new Driver of the Day winner being crowned in 2024

There is a reason why the British Grand Prix remains the hottest attraction on the Formula 1 calendar and the race did not disappoint, with a thrilling finale unfolding due to the interchangeable weather at Silverstone and a first-time Driver of the Day winner this season at the 2024 British GP.

There was absolutely no doubt who would be collecting the F1 Driver of the Day award after the absorbing and dramatic 52-lap race in Northamptonshire, as Lewis Hamilton ended a 56-race run without a victory to claim his 104th career victory.

Hamilton claimed a massive 36 per cent of the vote, although some might have thought he deserved a bigger share given his monumental effort to win the race.

The 39-year-old enjoyed one of the finest drives of his Mercedes career, seeing off a late threat from Max Verstappen to claim a record-breaking ninth victory in the British GP – no driver has won more races at the historic circuit.

It was also his first victory in F1 since Saudi Arabia in 2021, a wait that stretched back 946 days, to repeat the same result in 2020 when he beat Verstappen to the line with a destroyed front-left tyre.

Hamilton clinches emotional British GP win

Norris and Verstappen were both high in the voting, along with Oscar Piastri, who even led the race in wet conditions and finished fourth. It marked the first time this season that Hamilton had been crowned F1 Driver of the Day.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff called it a “fairytale”, while an emotional Peter ‘Bono’ Bonnington roared on the radio: “Get in there Lewis, you are the man! You are the man!”

A tearful Hamilton thanked the team back at the factory and his adoring fans in the crowd, struggling to keep his emotions in check.

He drove around the circuit on his victory lap with a Union Jack flag in his hand, and Hamilton then held a long embrace with his father Anthony as he climbed out of his W15 car. In his last home race with Mercedes, he had finally tasted victory again.
