As the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix race weekend comes to an end, George Russell of Mercedes took an likely win at the Red Bull Ring, ahead of Oscar Piastri in the McLaren, so don’t miss the complete Austrian GP results.

Max Verstappen started on pole position in Austria, and looked to have everything under control as he opened up a seven second gap to Lando Norris in second place. But then after a slow pit stop, Norris got into the Red Bull’s DRS zone on Lap 54.

That resulted in a multi-lap tussle between the pair, which culminated in a Lap 64 coming together between the pair which resulted in a puncture for Verstappen, with Norris retiring from the race.

Piastri brought some consolation to McLaren by finishing second, ahead of Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz in third. A significant gap followed to Lewis Hamilton in fourth, while Verstappen, despite receiving a 10-second penalty for the incident with Norris, managed to secure fifth place.

Dramatic end to the 2024 Austrian GP

Mercedes’ George Russell clinched a surprising win at the Austrian Grand Prix following a dramatic conclusion that saw Verstappen and Norris collide while vying for the lead. The incident dropped Verstappen down the order and forced Norris to retire.

Verstappen, who started strong from pole position and maintained the lead for most of the race, faced intense competition from McLaren’s Norris after their final pit stops on Lap 52 of 71. A rare slow pit stop for Red Bull, due to an issue with the left rear wheel, allowed Norris to close the gap to under two seconds.

Norris persistently pressured Verstappen, making several attempts to overtake. The tension culminated on Lap 64 when the two drivers made contact, resulting in punctures for both and forcing them to limp back to the pits.

This turn of events allowed Russell, who had been running third, to seize the lead. He maintained his position until the chequered flag, marking his second career victory in Formula 1.

Haas had a strong showing with Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen finishing sixth and eighth respectively, separated by Red Bull’s Sergio Perez in seventh. Daniel Ricciardo earned two points for RB with a ninth-place finish, and Alpine’s Pierre Gasly completed the top ten.

Charles Leclerc had an eventful race, recovering from a first-lap incident with Piastri to finish 11th after four pit stops. Alpine’s Esteban Ocon followed in 12th, having earlier engaged in a close battle with teammate Gasly.

Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll finished 13th, ahead of RB’s Yuki Tsunoda in 14th and Williams’ Alex Albon in 15th.

Sauber’s wait for their first points of 2024 continued, with Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu finishing 16th and 17th respectively. Fernando Alonso, who set the fastest lap on his final tour, struggled for pace and finished 18th after receiving a penalty for pushing Zhou off the track.

Logan Sargeant was the last classified finisher for Williams in 19th. Norris, carrying a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits, retired to the pits following his collision with Verstappen, ending a promising day in disappointment.
