F1 2024 Austrian GP – Fastest Lap

Fernando Alonso stole the fastest lap on the final lap with a 1:07.694 at the 2024 Austrian GP to give Aston Martin one positive out of a terrible weekend for both driver and team at the Red Bull Ring.

The Spaniard and his latest Formula 1 team came into the weekend not expecting much to happen and that’s how it seemed to be playing out for them through the Sprint Race and Qualifying as Alonso languished far down the order and almost faced a Q1 exit.

Then through 71 laps he couldn’t offer any challenge to the points and might even get some points on his F1 Super License after he was slapped with a 10-second penalty for crashing into Zhou Guanyu‘s Sauber with a failed overtaking attempt at Turn 3 at the Red Bull Ring.

But he got one thing to take out of the race on June 30 as he set the fastest lap of the Austrian GP on his final run thanks to some new soft tyres in the final stint, although he didn’t get the bonus point since he finished in 17th, one lap down on George Russell‘s winning Mercedes.

Verstappen crashes out of 2024 Austrian GP

Max Verstappen seemed as though he had the race under control through the opening stint as he comfortably extended the gap to Lando Norris at around three tenths per lap, with the Dutch fans in the crowd beginning to get ready to party.

But it all turned sour for the 26-year-old and his Red Bull crew when he began to struggle with his gearbox, tyres, wind and just about anything else you can think of as McLaren slowly, but surely, started to reel in the world champion.

And as if it couldn’t get much worse, any hard work he had put in through the previous laps was destroyed thanks to a rare slow stop by his team and backmarker traffic to put Norris firmly in his DRS as he launched repeated attacks on the championship leader.

After going to the limit with moving under braking, he finally paid the price when one move too late clipped the front-right tyre of Norris and left him with a rear-right puncture to watch his chances of winning fade away in front of his eyes as he was handed a 10-place penalty too.
