F1 2024 Austrian GP: Driver of the Day

The F1 Driver of the Day award is voted by the fans back at home, and the Austrian GP gave them a tough choice for which driver to pick following a dramatic finale

-

Choosing the official Formula 1 Driver of the Day award would have been tricky for fans watching the 2024 Austrian Grand Prix, after watching the two leading drivers with seven laps to go somehow finish outside of the podium places.

F1 hasn’t been treated to a race quite like the Austrian GP since Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton were fighting for the drivers’ championship after a dramatic finale to Sunday’s race at the Red Bull Ring where Lando Norris and Verstappen duelled for the win, only for both to suffer damage, allowing George Russell to seal a shock victory.

Ironically, it was Verstappen who was involved again in the tense battle for the lead after Norris had cut down his advantage from eight seconds to get into DRS range following their second pit stop at the Red Bull Ring.

And despite their feisty jostling for position, which resulted in Norris retiring from the race and Verstappen finishing down in fifth place, the McLaren driver earned the plaudits – taking the Austrian GP Driver of the Day award – after taking the three-time world champion to the very limit with some audacious overtakes.

Fans were at home were clearly impressed with the Briton’s driving as he attracted 24 per cent of the vote from the viewing audience.

The 24-year-old has proved to be a genuine challenger to Verstappen in the battle for the drivers’ world championship after winning in Miami earlier this season and coming ever so close in Spain.

This time, it certainly looked like he had the better of Verstappen before their controversial Lap 64 collision saw both drivers pick up a puncture.

They had sparred for several laps under DRS, with Norris trying all sorts of different manoeuvres to get the upper hand, but Verstappen’s expert defence – until their clash – proved to be too difficult to surpass.

The Dutchman was handed a 10-second penalty by the stewards, but McLaren are likely to be furious given how he was able to continue in the race and collect 11 points with a P5 finish and fastest lap award.

The Austrian GP Driver of the Day award for Norris is only a mere consolation as he fails to score points for the first time in 2024. But the Briton, who collected the award in six out of the 11 races this season, is proving just how popular he is with F1’s fanbase.
