Could Alex Albon return to Red Bull?

History could repeat itself at Red Bull as rumours suggest Sergio Perez's seat could be taken by Alex Albon, the driver who lost his seat to the Mexican in 2021

A difficult 2023 Formula 1 campaign has put Sergio Perez in a precarious position with his Red Bull contract due to expire at the end of this year and other drivers looking to take his seat.

Perez will undoubtedly be searching for a contract extension with Red Bull, but after being comfortably outperformed by teammate Max Verstappen in 2023, it’s been suggested that the team are looking to replace the Mexican.

A new teammate for Verstappen may come in the form of Alex Albon, according to F1 journalist Peter Windsor, who shared that the Williams driver could be looking at a multi-year deal with Red Bull.

“As I understand it, Albon has been offered a three-year contract to start in 2025,” said Windsor on his YouTube channel. “So I think you’re going to see him alongside Max Verstappen in the Red Bull. I can’t imagine he’s going to say no to that. From what I understand, it’s 90 percent correct.”

Albon, who currently drives for Williams, is no stranger to Red Bull. The 27-year-old made his F1 debut with Red Bull’s sister team, then known as Toro Rosso, before making the jump to Red Bull mid-way through his rookie season in 2019.

Albon spent 18 months with the Milton Keynes outfit, before being replaced with Perez at the end of the 2020 season.

How realistic is Albon to Red Bull?

Plenty of attention has been on Albon since he joined Williams in 2022. It wouldn’t necessarily come as a surprise if Albon‘s strong stint at the Grove-based team has caught the eye of Red Bull.

But while Albon has impressed during his time at Williams so far, the scars of his previous venture with Red Bull might still linger.

He only took two podiums in his 26 races for Red Bull and finished seventh in the 2020 driver standings, scoring less than half of Verstappen’s points total.

But with the improvements in his performance made since his departure from Red Bull, the Austrian team could be willing to give Albon a shot at redemption.

What about Mercedes?

The surprise announcement that Lewis Hamilton will be parting ways with Mercedes at the end of 2024 has suddenly freed up a seat within the Brackley-based team.

Albon‘s name has already been linked to the position, spurred on by the pre-existing links between Williams and Mercedes.

He gets on well with George Russell off the track, which could be decisive when Mercedes choose who they want to partner the British driver.

Carlos Sainz is also out of a seat in 2025 – and with a myriad of contracts coming to an end this year – the driver market is perhaps more competitive than ever.
