Adrian Newey to leave Red Bull amid Horner allegations in shock move

Red Bull will lose their chief designer Adrian Newey as he will leave the team in a shock move

-

Red Bull chief designer Adrian Newey will leave the team amid allegations involving Christian Horner according to multiple reports.

Newey has been at Red Bull since the end of 2005 and has been instrumental to their six constructors’ titles and seven drivers’ championships.

The BBC and renowned German publication Auto Motor und Sport have verified Newey will depart Red Bull, but a date is yet to be confirmed. Newey‘s contract runs out at the end of 2025, but he’s reportedly negotiated for after the current 2024 season.

It’s believed that Newey‘s decision to leave is down to unhappiness surrounding the situation involving Horner, who had allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards a female employee dismissed in March 2024.

The woman has since been suspended by Red Bull on full pay but is appealing the dismissal.

Turmoil at Red Bull

As F1 headed to the flyaway races in Australia, Japan and China, noise around the Horner sage had quietened down and much of the focus was on Red Bull‘s dominance on the track, as Max Verstappen took his fifth consecutive pole last time out at the Chinese Grand Prix and a fourth win of 2024.

But, Newey‘s departure is a significant moment for Red Bull as they have lose the man who designed the four cars which Sebastian Vettel won titles in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013, plus Verstappen‘s more recent success in 2021, 2022, 2023 and likely 2024.

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko was seemingly close to leaving during the Saudi Arabian GP, but he stayed after holding talks with Red Bull managing director Oliver Mintzlaff.

It’s understood that the Thai main shareholder Chalerm Yoovidhya has the backing of Horner, but the 49 percent Austrian shareholders have not fully supported the Red Bull team principal, with a power struggle also evolving at the company.

Newey is, statistically, the greatest designer in F1 history, having made 12 championship-winning cars, first with Williams in the 1990s, McLaren in 1998, then Red Bull.

Ferrari have previously made offers to sign Newey, but the British engineer has denied them. With Lewis Hamilton joining Ferrari in 2025, it’s possible Newey and Hamilton could work together next year.

As for Verstappen, he’s continually stated he will stay at Red Bull as long as there is peace but hasn’t outright said he will definitely see out his contract which expires at the end of 2028.
