Wolff sets Mercedes expectations for 2023 Brazilian GP

Lewis Hamilton was second in the 2023 Mexico City GP

Toto Wolff has hinted he’s hoping Mercedes might be able to repeat their stunning success of a year ago at the 2023 Brazilian Grand Prix, after confirming the W14‘s newly upgraded floor has been a success.

George Russell won both the grand prix and sprint race at Interlagos in 2022 – his first victory in 2021 – though he benefitted from Max Verstappen getting tangled with Lewis Hamilton to take both drivers out of the race for victory.

Hamilton has achieved back-to-back podiums on track heading to Sao Paulo this time around, though he was disqualified from the United States GP for too much wear on his floor plank.

“I think obviously the longer you have the upgrade on the car and collect data, the better you’re going to be able to tune it,” Wolff told the media. “I don’t want to set the expectations high, because last year came as a little bit of a surprise that we dominated that weekend.

“So I think we have to go there knowing we have a good car, if we put all the ducks in one line then I think we can we can have a very strong weekend. Whether it’s good enough to beat Max… their package, driver car power, and is just very complete.”

All on yellow: Why Mercedes took medium gamble

Wolff also hailed a ‘courageous’ call from his strategists to put both drivers on the medium tyres in the final stint of the Mexico City GP.

Hamilton quickly passed Charles Leclerc for second at the restart and the Ferrari‘s hard tyres never came back against the softer rubber, with the gap growing lap-on-lap until the chequered flag.

Hamilton even had time to claim the fastest lap, meaning he’s halved the deficit to Sergio Perez for second in the drivers’ championship to 20 points.

“We couldn’t really take the hards because that was seven or eight laps older than our competitors,” Wolff added. “So the medium was pretty fresh, a lap and a half, and it was holding on strong in the first stint, Charles did 31 laps and didn’t really drop off so that’s why we made the call.

“But it was a courageous call from strategy and it paid off.”
