F1 2023 United States GP – Fastest Lap

Max Verstappen took victory at the 2023 United States Grand Prix in Austin

Yuki Tsunoda stole the fastest lap of the 2023 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix from his returning teammate, Daniel Ricciardo, as Max Verstappen held on in an intriguing race.

The Japanese driver set a 1:38.139 on the final lap after both AlphaTauri cars fitted the soft tyres at the end of the race. He also claimed his first F1 points since the Belgian GP in July.

That brings his total up to four points, with four 10th placed finishes, in this season as he moves to within two points of Zhou Guanyu who is occupying 17th.

Verstappen hangs on for win

The Dutchman was made to work for the 50th win of his career as Verstappen faced challenges from Lando Norris, Lewis Hamilton and his own RB19 with brake issues during the 56-lap race.

However, he remained impervious to any problems thrown in his way to move to be within three of Sebastian Vettel‘s career total and third in history as the most winningest driver.

During the final laps, he bled lap-time as Hamilton closed in on medium tyres, even raging at his engineer to stop talking to him during the braking zones such was the concentration he needed to maintain his speed.

It could go down as one of his finest victories in F1 as he pulled out all of the stops to maintain first place and take his 15th win of the season and extend his points advantage over Sergio Perez.

Elsewhere, Norris closed out the podium in third whilst Fernando Alonso, Oscar Piastri and Esteban Ocon all retired form the race with the latter pair suffering damage from contact whilst Alonso suffered a rear suspension failure after getting into the points positions despite a pit-lane start.
