Sainz calls for FIA to find solution to unexplainable problem

Carlos Sainz recovered to sixth after opening lap contact with Lewis Hamilton in Las Vegas

Carlos Sainz has called on the FIA and Formula 1 to figure out how to make the safety car go faster as drivers struggled to find temperature in their tyres at the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix.

F1 tyres are unique as they have to be carefully looked after in order to work properly and if they don’t have enough heat, then they grain and lose grip, which was a problem that occurred regularly at the Las Vegas Strip Circuit in the November cold.

Further contributing to the problem was the safety car, according to the Spaniard and a handful of drivers, which didn’t have enough pace to allow drivers to maintain temperatures close to the optimal level.

“The safety car restart was like driving on ice,” Sainz said to media. “We need to find a solution. I think the safety car has got to be quicker in certain scenarios because it was absolutely… I cannot explain to you guys how it feels.

“To go to Turn 1 at 340kph and knowing that when you’re going to hit the brake, that the thing is not going to stop… Yeah, very tricky.”

The safety car is a fast car in its own right, capable of clocking 200mph and going 0-62mph in 3.2 seconds but compared to an F1 car it is painfully slow as it lacks anywhere near the same amount of downforce.

It isn’t the first time a driver has complained about the pace of the Aston Martin or Mercedes safety cars, and several other drivers complained about it during the 50 laps of the Las Vegas GP.

Sainz mourns what could have been for Ferrari

Ferrari put up a strong fight for victory in Las Vegas as they appeared to manage their tyres better than the Red Bull cars.

Charles Leclerc only led for a total of 10 laps but he was in first place as late as Lap 36 and spent the majority of the race closely tucked up in second where he went on to finish, just two seconds behind Max Verstappen.

“You saw what happened up front and the pace Charles had and with two Ferraris up there I think we would have had a very good fun race for the win.

“We missed out a bit on that. Although it was a good day for our team in terms of constructors [championship], it should have been even better.”
