Pirelli send warning to teams ahead of Qatar GP

Pirelli are already predicting a multiple-stop race for the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix

Pirelli have warned that Formula 1 teams are expected to face high-degradation on their tyres around the Losail International Circuit at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix.

The layout is similar to the Silverstone and Suzuka circuits, with lots of high-speed corners and reliance on kerbs which can quickly degrade tyres.

One-stop strategies will be hard to make work, in a similar way to what George Russell discovered at the Japanese GP as his failed one-stop shuffled him back to seventh by the end of the 53-lap race.

This should not be too surprising however. In the 2021 edition of the Qatar GP, four cars experienced punctures after attempting to make the minimum required total of pit-stops, including MercedesValtteri Bottas, despite Pirelli advising a two-stop race.

For 2023, the Italian tyre manufacturer hves once again warned against the idea around the Losail International Circuit.

“In terms of tyre severity, Lusail is a very demanding circuit, comparable to Silverstone and Suzuka,” said Mario Isola, Pirelli‘s head of motorsport.

“It is no coincidence that the trio of compounds chosen for this race is the same, namely C1-C2-C3. There are different types of curves, most at medium and high speed.

“The series of corners between 12 and 14 is quite reminiscent of Turn 8 at the Istanbul circuit, one of the most demanding for tyres in recent F1 history, and is one of the decisive points for achieving a good lap time.

“The fact that eleven of the 16 corners are on the right particularly stresses the left side of the car, especially the first corner, but the energy levels recorded on the tyres in 2021 were still quite well balanced between the two axles.”

How can Max Verstappen win his third Drivers’ Championship?

The third drivers’ championship of Max Verstappen‘s career has been more of a formality than a possibility for months now, after he began to pull away from Sergio Perez following the Miami GP in May

With a championship lead of 177 points over his Red Bull teammate going into Qatar, the Dutchman needs just three more points to seal the deal regardless of whatever Perez does.

That can manifest in a handful of ways and is most likely to happen in the Sprint Race on Saturday, should he finish 6th or better.
