Norris throws shade at Perez: Red Bull rumours heating up

The Red Bull driver is under pressure and a host of suitors are lined up to take his seat

Sergio Perez is under attack once again, this time by McLaren’s Lando Norris as the Briton declares that a host of drivers would make things “more complicated” for Formula 1‘s runaway championship leader Max Verstappen.

Perez trails his teammate by 266 points and has only taken two wins in 2023’s F1 season compared to Verstappen’s 17. Additionally, Perez is closer to Nyck de Vries in the standings than the world champion, with De Vries having stopped racing after 10 rounds of the season.

It’s led many drivers to cast their names into the ballot to replace the driver who is reportedly looked unfavourably upon by Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner and other key figures such as Helmut Marko.

One such name is Norris, with the Milton Keynes outfit being keen on the idea of hiring his services thanks to his impressive performances and positive relationship with Verstappen, whom he considers a friend and now he appears to be flirting back with F1’s dominant team.

“I would like to be one at some point,” Norris said to DAZN on joining Red Bull. “Who else could it be? It would be nice if it was Lewis [Hamilton], it would be amazing to see him.

“Or Fernando [Alonso], or Carlos [Sainz], or Charles [Leclerc], or [George] Russell? They’re all great drivers who you know would make it tougher for him [Verstappen]. There have always been rumours with me and other drivers.”

However, when he was asked about his own connection to Red Bull he simply said, “no comment” and refused to elaborate further.

Norris’ history with Red Bull

Norris has previously been linked to Red Bull but reportedly rejected them and opted to remain with McLaren, where he has been since joining the sport as a rookie in 2019. On the back of discussions with Verstappen’s team, he chose to extend his stay at Woking until 2025.

“Of course, there are talks with other people from time to time,” Norris told AMuS. “You always ask yourself the question: What’s best for my career? After all, I want to win [races] and win world championships.

“There have been talks with Red Bull. They are a team that has been in the top three for years. But that just shows even more how much confidence I have in McLaren. Although there were talks, I felt McLaren was better for me to achieve my goals.”
