Ferrari and Carlos Sainz in particular will be happy with their performance in FP1 at the 2023 Monaco GP, as the Scuderia were 0.338s faster than Fernando Alonso in the Aston Martin.
Max Verstappen had a tough time getting the set up right on his Red Bull, complaining about the rear of the car, before eventually setting a time which was only sixth fastest.
The new Mercedes upgrades looked to be having some impact on the team with Lewis Hamilton third, but there were contrasting fortunes as his teammate George Russell could only manage 15th and said the rear of the car was weak.
Williams driver Alex Albon then brought the session to a halt after slamming into the barrier at Turn 1 which brought out the red flag with three minutes remaining of the session.
