F1 2023 Mexico City GP – Driver Ratings

Here are our driver ratings for Round 20 of the 2023 Formula 1 season at the Mexico CIty Grand Prix in Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez

Red Bull driver Max Verstappen silenced a boisterous home crowd with a dominant victory in Sunday’s 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix.

Lewis Hamilton came home a distant second ahead of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, with Lando Norris producing a stellar drive from 17th to fifth.

Total-Motorsport.com’s driver ratings for the 2023 Mexico City GP assesses all 20 drivers based on their qualifying and race performances in Mexico City.

Team errors such as a slow pit stop or poor strategy do not affect our ratings as they are no fault of the drivers. Instead, our driver ratings solely look at how well the drivers got on throughout the weekend in Mexico City.

F1 Driver Ratings – Mexico City GP

Max Verstappen 9/10

Qualifying: 3rd – Race: 1st

Sweet 16 for Verstappen, who made amends after missing out on pole to dominate Sunday’s race from lights to flag.

Lewis Hamilton 8/10

Qualifying: 6th – Race: 2nd

Mercedes looked second best at Mexico, but Hamilton still had a great weekend, driving a clever race on the mediums to secure his first podium since Singapore.

Charles Leclerc 8.5/10

Qualifying: 1st – Race: 3rd

Leclerc produced a superb final run to take a surprise pole, but with Verstappen jumping him at both stars and damage from a Lap 1 skirmish with Perez meant third was the best he could manage.

Carlos Sainz 7.5/10

Qualifying: 2nd – Race: 4th

Sainz played second fiddle to Leclerc for most of the weekend and lost too much time on the one-stopper, putting him behind Hamilton for the rest of the race.

Lando Norris 9/10

Qualifying: 19th – Race: 5th

Despite having a horrid qualifying and a poor second start, Norris produced an outstanding drive in the race weekend, making up 12 spots and earning him driver of the day honours.

George Russell 6.5/10

Qualifying: 8th – Race: 6th

Russell was pretty inconspicuous in Mexico, once again being out-qualified by his teammate before his tyres caused him to relinquish fifth to Norris in the closing stages.

Daniel Ricciardo 8.5/10

Qualifying: 4th – Race: 7th

That’s more like it from Ricciardo, who was back to his best in Mexico, qualifying an excellent fourth before driving a calm race to earn his first F1 points since the 2022 Abu Dhabi GP.

Oscar Piastri 7/10

Qualifying: 7th – Race:  8th

Back in the points again for Piastri, who won out his hard-fought dual with Tsunoda to help secure decent points for himself and McLaren.

Alex Albon 7/10

Qualifying: 14th – Race: 9th

Two points for Albon after making up for the deficiencies of his Williams and losing out on a Q3 birth with a fine comeback drive through the pack.

Esteban Ocon 6/10

Qualifying: 16th – Race: 10th

Out in Q1, Ocon didn’t have the pace on merit to get points, but jumping Gasly on the exit of Turn 1 at the restart paved the way for him to pick up a solitary point.

Pierre Gasly 6.5/10

Qualifying: 11th – Race: 11th

Gasly enjoyed a solid race in the points after having a clean opening stint, but the red flag and the loss of pace afterwards threw his chances of points out the window.

Yuki Tsunoda 6.5/10

Qualifying: 15th [started 18th] – Race: 12th

Tsunoda played rear gunner for Ricciardo in Qualifying after taking on a fresh power unit. He had looked set to join his teammate in the points before coming off second best in a tangle with Piastri.

Nico Hulkenberg 6.5/10

Qualifying: 12th – Race: 13th

It looked as though Hulkenberg would have a 200th GP to remember with points, but sadly, a failed gamble on the one-stop strategy left him empty-headed.

Zhou Guanyu 5/10

Qualifying: 10th – Race: 14th

Zhou had been running in the top 10 before the red flag ruined his race and, with it, any chance of getting anything from Mexico.

Valtteri Bottas 4.5/10

Qualifying: 9th – Race: 15th

Gearbox issues plagued Bottas from the start of the race, putting the Finn’s chances of points in jeopardy, but he didn’t help himself by punting Stroll into a spin, earning a five-second penalty.

Logan Sargeant 4/10

Qualifying: 20th – Race: DNF

Sadly, Mexico was a case of back to normal for Sargeant after a 10-place grid penalty for a yellow flag infringement followed a Q1 exit. A quiet drive in the midfield ended early because of a fuel pump issue.

Lance Stroll 3.5/10

Qualifying: 18th [started from the pitlane]  – Race: DNF

Not a good birthday weekend for Stroll as brake problems cut his practice time before securing his seventh consecutive Q1 exit. A clip from Bottas late in the race caused a puncture, which ended his day early.

Fernando Alonso 4.5/10

Qualifying: 13th – Race: DNF

From bad to worse for Alonso as an ill-handling, Aston Martin caused him to spin in Q1 and miss out on Q3 again. Damage on Lap 1 meant points became a fantasy before he retired the car on Lap 47.

Kevin Magnussen 4.5/10

Qualifying: 17th – Race: DNF

Magnussen had made steady progress after a poor Qualifying session, but a rear suspension failure caused a heavy shunt on Lap 33, ending his chances of salving something in Mexico.

Sergio Perez 4/10

Qualifying: 5th – Race: DNF

It was a heartbreaking home weekend for Perez, after being out-qualified by an AlphaTauri before ending his race after one lap following contact with Leclerc into Turn 1.
