Max Verstappen explains use of security guards at Mexico City GP

Max Verstappen could face a hostile atmosphere in Mexico City

Max Verstappen has explained why he is using security guards at the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix, as Formula 1 pitches up in the country’s capital.

The Dutchman received a chorus of boos last weekend in Austin as he took to the podium as the winner of the 2023 United States GP, with a strong Mexican presence trackside and their obvious allegiances to his Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez being laid bare.

It’s expected that he will receive a similar reception this weekend given it’s Perez‘s home race and Red Bull and their three-time world champion have opted to beef up security around him for the event.

“I have a bit more security here [than normal] but there are a few countries around the world where it is very busy,” Verstappen told the press.

“Also here in the paddock, for example last year it was really busy to get to the garage and it just helps to make [the weekend] smoother on track, off track, and with travel from your hotel [and] stuff like that.”

Verstappen has won a record four times in Mexico and is looking to break his own record of 15 wins in a single campaign with victory this Sunday at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

The 26-year-old says he will only take precautions if it helps the general flow of the weekend and played down fears of not feeling safe in front of a likely vociferous home crowd.

“I feel very safe. I mean yesterday (Wednesday) I had a whole marketing day and it’s been honestly a great reception here, like I’ve always had, and it’s just good to be back,” concluded Verstappen.
