Max Verstappen admits his first attempt on Las Vegas GP track didn’t go to plan

Max Verstappen hopes the 2023 Las Vegas GP will be his 18th win of the F1 season

Max Verstappen still has plenty to learn ahead of the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix after admitting he spent more time driving into walls than in a straight line when he first tried it on his Formula 1 game.

The super-high-speed Las Vegas Strip Circuit has about as much in common with the city’s motor speedway as it does with Monaco or the Caesar’s Palace car park track that hosted two ill-fated grand prix in the 1980s.

However, that should play to the strengths of the RB19 with Verstappen gunning for a record-extending 18th win of the 2023 F1 season, and his third win from three in the USA after victories in Miami and Austin.

“I’ll deal with that once I arrive at the track, I mean there’s still a lot to do,” Verstappen told the media at the 2023 Brazilian GP. “I still need to go on the simulator, I still don’t even know the track to be honest.

“So the last time I tried it on the F1 game I think I hit more walls than I was going straight so let’s hope that’s not the case when I start driving there!”

Everyone associated with the Las Vegas GP has been at pains to point out how different it’ll be from the Caesar’s Palace fiasco, described as one of the worst circuits in F1 history.

Held in daytime in October in front of few fans in a casino car park, F1 has changed things up dramatically with the 2023 edition running on Saturday night right down the Las Vegas Strip – one of the most iconic roads in the world.

That brings its own challenges though – qualifying is set to start at midnight in mid-November so teams are preparing for tyre temperature problems in the opposite direction.

“Yeah it’s going to be very different to here,” Verstappen added. “Very low temperatures of course in the night there, a street circuit we have no experience on, we don’t know the track grip. All new so maybe it will give you a few surprises, I don’t know.”
