Marko takes a swipe at Lewis Hamilton: Now he admits mistakes

Lewis Hamilton blamed himself for colliding with George Russell in Qatar

Helmut Marko has suggested Lewis Hamilton is only starting to admit his own mistakes after colliding with Mercedes teammate George Russell at the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix.

The incident occurred on Lap 1, with Hamilton starting on the softs from third whilst Russell was on the medium tyres in second. Hamilton tried to go around the outside of Russell but the pair made contact, putting the seven-time world champion out of the race.

Hamilton, who had accidents with Nico Rosberg in 2014 and 2016, publicly apologised for the collision on X, formerly Twitter, and in the media.

Asked by OE24 if Hamilton is starting to make error, the Red Bull figure said: “May I correct that, please. Now he’s starting to admit mistakes.”

Missed opportunity for Hamilton

In his quest to finish second in the drivers’ championship, Hamilton cannot afford to make any mistakes if he hopes to rein in Sergio Perez and Qatar was his first costly mistake of a long season.

With the Mexican target starting from the pit-lane and failing to score in the Sprint Race, Hamilton had a chance to make some big inroads into the 29-point deficit he needed to close down.

Marko was aware of the fortune Perez had in an otherwise poor weekend as Hamilton continues to pose a threat to the runners-up spot.

“This fear is actually very concrete,” the Austrian added. “Without the crash, Hamilton would have made up 10, 15 points again.”
