Jos Verstappen takes swipe at Sergio Perez after Saudi Arabian GP victory

Sergio Perez converted pole position into the race win while Max Verstappen recovered to second from 15th on the grid at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix

Jos Verstappen has suggested that his son, Max Verstappen, would have easily won the Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix without mechanical issues in qualifying.

Verstappen Jr had to claw his way back from 15th on the grid at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit to take second behind his teammate, who started from pole position in his Red Bull.

Jos, a former F1 driver himself, has suggested that Perez pushed even harder in Saudi Arabia because he does not get the chance to win very often compared to his son.

“Of course, we all want to win but that was not possible today,” Jos Verstappen said, as quoted by The Mirror. “The margin was too small for that. I don’t think [Perez] gets the chance that often. He sees that too and then goes for it.

“It went against us in qualifying. Bad luck, I won’t go into that. We know what it is. But otherwise, Max just easily drives to that pole position. And then the race is a bit easier.”

More to come says Jos Verstappen

Red Bull have a very obvious and alarmingly-large performance advantage over the rest of the field right now but their reduced wind tunnel time could hamper their progress.

Jos Verstappen, however, does not see any team getting close to their level this season and he even hinted that further developments would be on the way in the near future.

“It looks like we will be dominant. We have a very good car,” Jos added. “If you saw how easily they drove away now too – a second faster.

“Whether that can be overtaken by the rest this year? I don’t know. But it’s not like we’re standing still either. We are also coming up with updates.”
