Hamilton frustrated by tough Mercedes car at Silverstone

The seven-time F1 world champion finished both practice sessions outside the top 10

Lewis Hamilton knows that there is a lot of work to do after a horrid day at the 2023 Formula 1 British Grand Prix.

The seven-time world champion boasts an exceptional record at his home event but the W14 would not play ball during FP1 and FP2 in which he failed to reach the top 10 in either session.

There were similar issues for his teammate George Russell and after the day’s driving was done, Hamilton admitted that the same problems keep cropping up for Mercedes.

“We’re battling the same thing the majority of the time,” Hamilton told the media, including Total-Motorsport.com, after FP2 at the British GP.

“It’s a tough car to drive and no matter what we do setup wise it continues to be a tough car to drive.

“On a single lap, I didn’t feel any improvement between tyres which shows that there’s something wrong. The long run didn’t seem too bad so that’s a positive, at least.”

Best track in the world

Hamilton has claimed victory eight times at Silverstone, more than any other driver, and has reached the podium in every race since the turbo hybrid era began.

Despite his woeful Friday at his home race, Hamilton enjoyed driving what he believes is the best track in the world. The Brit particularly enjoys the challenges that come from the exposed nature of many of the corners which makes the wind a very unpredictable factor.

“Very windy, it’s often windy here,” Hamilton added. “I think the wind is what helps it become the best track in the world, tailwind, crosswind, it’s pretty phenomenal.”
