Hamilton on Brad Pitt F1 movie: Doing things that haven’t been done before

The team behind the Apex F1 movie filmed on-track at the 2023 British GP

Lewis Hamilton has promised big updates coming soon from the Brad Pitt Formula 1 movie he’s consulting on, and said the film is breaking new ground after production was delayed by the Hollywood strikes.

Hamilton has helped produce the movie directed by Joseph Kosinski (also responsible for Top Gun: Maverick) and the 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix is set to play a major role in the film following the Apex team who have used a real modified F2 car.

The team also shot on-track at the British GP, with Pitt and his teammate’s actor Damson Idris joining the F1 drivers at the front of the grid for the national anthems just minutes before the formation lap – which was also filmed.

“The movie is huge step in that direction of broadening the horizon,” Hamilton told the media. “And it’s great that we are embarking on things that we’ve never done before, I really think they’re doing an amazing job.

“There’s going to be a huge spotlight on Vegas, and that will play an important part of our movie, we’re really just working as hard as we can to make sure that it’s a true reflection of this legendary sport, both the old and the new.”

Hamilton was speaking ahead of the 2023 United States GP, the second of three races in the country before the F1 circus heads to Las Vegas in four weeks’ time.

It’s part of an extended Americas leg that will see the Mexico City and Sao Paulo GPs in consecutive weeks after Austin, and Hamilton hailed F1 expanding its brand across the Atlantic.

He stressed the Apex film will be an important part of that growth, and praised the support of F1 chief Stefano Domenicali and Liberty chief Greg Maffei.

“I think that’s really part of the new leadership with Liberty, with the great work that Stefano and Greg are doing and being open to try new things,” Hamilton added.

“And the fact that we’re allowed to do this movie and have the concessions in terms of allowing an extra team being on track and filming with these film stars, it’s never been done before.”
